100% agree but from what i read quintana's price right was three top prospects all better than what we have.

With Duffy we may have to take on a contract like Ventura (i think that is his name) who has four years l left i believe on his contract. He is a head case but we need pitching.
yeah Quintana has a huge price tag.

Ventura I didn't even think about, I would love to have Yordano Ventura if available. What kind of package do you think it would take to get duffy?

Good question. They want young and cheap. I would think we would have to get Duffy and Ventura and give up Paxton and a high level bat like O'NEILL (sp?). Too much? Not enough?

Im not the best at placing value. You have any ideas on it? Diaz was another option to replace Wade.

I did just read that we are takking with Rays and Reds about pitching right now. That could be interesting as well. I doubt Archer is the target but tgey have others.

I think Paxton and O'Neill gets you in the ballpark maybe add some higher rated lower level prospect but there is also value in taking on Ventura's contract which may help keep the price tag lower.

Personally I was thinking of something like Paxton, and a mixture of players like Gohara, Neidert and Andrew Moore. But if they are looking for good prospect bat then O'Neill is probably where you go. I really would like to stay away from trading O'Neill and especially Diaz, I just find it hard to justify loosing those top guys for mid level starting pitching.

Lots of intriguing starting pitching options between the two of those teams. I just hope its not Homer Bailey.

I would take Homer Simpson over Bailey.

Archer is on a pretty team friendly deal so that price tag will likely be too rich. Odorizzi and Cobb would be decent options tho. There's no one on the reds that really does it for me outside of maybe Desclafani.

Not much happening in Mariner land lately....

Yea the FA market seemed to have stalled. Maybe that changes now that Encarnacion signed as he was the biggest fish out there. I'm kinda disappointed that the bullpen doesn't seem to be a priority. Seems like it's an arm or two short

Yeah I think the bullpen still gets tweeked but probably not too much. I was hoping we would get either a big upgrade in the starting rotation or a big upgrade in the bullpen.

Things should start rolling again after the Holiday and Edwin coming off the board.

With Dip saying he prefers to trade over vs signing free agents, it is no wonder why it has stalled. We don't exactly have a lot left on the shelf to trade. I still think we should assemble the best pen available because there aren't any move-the-needle starters still out there via trade. Welcome back to 8-7 or 7-8 games.

In reference to the Encarnacion signing in Cleveland, I wonder how many season tickets Marc Rzepczynski gained us?

I get the whole untouchable prospect thing is over blown, but is their anyway O'Neill can be tossed into the untouchable category? This franchise's farm system has sucked since Pat Gillick, not because a lack of pitchers but because they can't ever get an all star caliber position player to AAA, except twice in which they dealt both in Jones and Choo. They need to eventually fill the roster with half homemade talent or otherwise it will be the same purgatory we have been in since Gillick. Always one or two pieces away but don't either have enough to trade for those pieces or don't have the money in the budget to sign those pieces.

The M's just traded with Baltimore for Yovani Gallardo. His ERA from last year doesn't look good, but his career ERA is good and he won't have to make roughly half his starts at Camden Yards anymore. We gave up Seth Smith to get him. Smith was a consistent, proven hitter when he was in there, but he was only being platooned and the M's needed to bolster the starting rotation, so he became the odd man out.

He stunk outside of Camden Yards last year, and it looks like much of his problems last year were due to poor control (61 walks in just 118 innings).

His K rate's been decreasing and his walk rate's been increasing the past few years....not a good sign when predicting future performance.

So we trade:

Karns and Smith

for

Gallardo and Dyson

There must be more to come because a team hurting for pitching doesn't swap a younger, cheaper SP for a past his prime, more expensive SP. I kind of get the Dyson for Smith deal. Cheaper, better defense, and faster. Will miss Smith who was a good clutch hitter,

Gallardo last season worries me but I really like Dyson as an upgrade defensively. Will miss Smith at the plate he is an entirely different style player than Dyson.

All and all this sequence of trades I found to be a bit odd.

Until last season, Gallardo had a rep for being durable and a workhorse with an ERA that was usually somewhere between 3.00 and 4.00. His strikeout to walk ratio was awful last year, but he has otherwise been pretty good in that department. Not 2014 Hisashi Iwakuma good, but pretty good. It's not a "sexy" trade by any means, but if he can stay healthy and have a typical Gallardo season statistically in the process, that's one less spot in the rotation to worry about. After using 11 different starters last year, the more workhorses you can get your hands on, the better off you should be.

Unless something weird happens, I think we can lock in a front four of Felix, Iwakuma, Paxton and Gallardo, with the fifth spot in the rotation up for grabs among who knows how many candidates. Dipoto might even make another trade between now and Spring Training to pick up another starter. Maybe he doesn't have the upside of Karns because of his age, but if Karns had a higher upside, Gallardo has a track record of durability, reliability and good typically good results working in his favor given what the Mariners are trying to do this season, which is make the playoffs. Karns had trouble getting through the 5th inning with a decent pitch count most of the time.

I don't know... I could just be talking out of my ass here, but I'm just trying to get inside Dipoto's head with this trade. We'll see how it goes.
