A mandate to wear a mask in service of public safety is no different than things like traffic laws. It is not an infringement of freedom that you are prohibited from driving the wrong way on a street--that puts people in active, physical danger, and you could go wherever you wanted without breaking that law anyway.

Likewise with a mask mandate. Masks are most effective at slowing/stopping the spread of disease if everyone is wearing one. It is a public health directive, which is extremely effective, and not at all invasive. It is literally the function of government to design and implement such protocols. People can still go wherever they want, can still freely express their identities and personalities, can still pursue their hobbies and interests. All tangible, substantive freedoms are preserved. That piece of cloth infringes none of them.

We have fallen into a cultural trap in this country of defining "freedom" as the ability to harm those around us without consequence; the ability to decide between the largest possible selection of bad options, rather than banding together to provide one good one; the ability to subjugate others in selfish pursuits. These freedoms are all either empty and performative, or evil, though. If we instead used government to create a safe, healthy, and communal society, we could achieve real freedoms, though: freedom of identity and expression, freedom to chase down our deepest interest, and freedom from the fear of medical bankruptcy or crippling debt or eviction when just one thing goes wrong.
