The third year of the Scott Frost era at Nebraska could be a pivotal one for the Huskers head coach. Well, that’s according to CBS Sports’ college football reporter Dennis Dodd.

On Wednesday, Dodd released his “hot seat” rankings for the 2020 college football season. While he admits that jobs in college football have never been safer due to the ongoing pandemic and other circumstances, there’s still a chance a few head coaches could be in hot water.

Frost was listed in the “win or be fired” category, which seems a touch harsh for the third-year head coach. Of course, the Huskers have only won nine games over the last two seasons, failing to make a bowl game yet under Frost.

Still, Frost has been overhauling the roster and plays in one of the toughest conferences in the country. Considering what he’s inherited in Lincoln, he might have a longer leash than Dodd anticipates.

Here’s what Dodd said regarding Frost’s job status:

You knew things slid at Nebraska when Frost said his program can be the new Wisconsin in the Big Ten West. What about the old Nebraska? Frost is one of the smartest, most refreshing coaches out there, but the turnaround hasn’t happened. It almost hurts. Frost is better than this. Nebraska should be better than this. JD Spielman was heading toward being the program’s career-leading receiver before transferring. If Frost (a native son) can’t get it done, who can? A bowl game — at least — is needed.

Nebraska finished the 2019 campaign with a 5-7 record and a 3-6 mark in B1G play. However, the Huskers lost four of those games by one possession and could’ve hit bowl eligibility.

Have the first two years been disappointing in Lincoln for Frost and his staff? Sure. But it seems incredibly unlikely that athletic director Bill Moos will be looking for another option anytime soon.

I think he'll be back next year. That said, there is no longer any reason for Nebraska to be elite. They'll never be higher than 4th in elite status in the Big 10.

Thing is.. they can, atleast in the West division. No reason why they can't be a better version of Iowa or Wisconsin. They typically can recruit well out west, no reason why they can't ascend. I also think unlike Iowa or Wisconsin, they can compete with pedo and michigan in recruiting. not going there with tosu right now.
