Anybody else get the feeling that this deal looks like it does only because his agent wanted to say he negotiated the largest deal ever? Just from the structure, it doesnt look likely that he will play it all out.

We’ll never truly understand it until @Brees#1 gives his thoughts on it.

24 reasons? Where'd he pull that number from?

Never mind, I don't think I want nor care to know.
It's a Texans blew a 24-0 lead against him crack.

What would be even tougher is winning a SB without Mahomes

Well yeah you gotta keep him, but this is what makes it tough to keep winning, these massive cap hits ...

Base salaries starting in 2022

22 = 1,500.000
23 = 5,000.000
24 = 2,500.000
25 = 2,500.000
26 = 2,500.000

His money is all tied to bonuses.

I wonder how much that'll effect the salary cap

His cap numbers are much much higher since it's a yearly roster bonus contract.
I don't know why they're paying him mostly via bonuses, but they are. Maybe it saves the team money this way if the ever have to cut him.

Then again, I do believe roster bonuses are guaranteed when the season starts where base salary isn't.

I really don't know.

One injury and he could quickly become like Wentz. It will be interesting to see how the next 10 years play out.

If you look at the contract the Chiefs can cut bait as early as 2023 with next to nothing dead cap

I see it as 4M in dead cap if he's cut before 2023.
I keep seeing people say this but I don't think that is true. Don't forget that the salary and roster bonuses for 2023 would already have been guaranteed at that point. If he is cut before 2023 and assuming that is within the first couple of days of the league year his dead money is huge because I believe it includes the 2023 and 2024 salary and bonuses. If I'm correct that would make his dead money if cut before 2023 over $70M and way more than that if the Chiefs allocate his 2021 and 2022 roster bonuses over 5 years like most teams do and don't take the hit in a single year. I could be misreading this of course.

Again I just dont know on this contact. It's the first one structured like it is. I'm just going off of the available information on OTC and Spotrac.

The information I'm using is from those sites. The dead cap listed is as it sits today. Each time an amount becomes guaranteed it increases the dead money.
This is how I read it. As an example, If Mahomes were cut after 3 years (assume 2nd day of 2025 league year) of the new deal (ignoring 2020 and 2021 salaries which were already set) he would get a total of $159.8M ($198.7M if after 3rd league day) in new money or $53.3M/year. The one thing I think I had wrong earlier from reading it closer is the 2025 money guarantees in 23 and 24 but the 2026 money doesn't guarantee until the 3rd league day of 2025.

This is my understanding of how it works and I certainly may be wrong
If cut 2nd day of 2025 league year new money
$10M - paid at signing
2022 - $29.45M
2023 - $40.45M
2024 - $37.95M
2025 - $41.95M RB guarantees 2023; Sal and WB guarantees 2024

If cut after the 2nd league day add $38.9M for 2026

Dead money would be the $42M for 2025 monies plus any unallocated roster bonus which could be as high as 4/5ths of the 2024 RB ($28M), 3/5ths of the 2023 RB ($21M)and 2/5ths of the 2022 RB ($11M). That could be as high as $102M in dead money if cut before 2025.

Again, I could be wrong on all of this but this is how I read it.

:think: that's sounds extremely complicated. While I appreciate others doing the math, I think I'll just sit here and watch it play out. Not like Mahomes is going to share any with me anyways.
