a friend from college recently died from pneumonia, who knows if it was brought on by corona or flu though, they didn't say. I played in something like symphonic band and pep band with her, and an alumni jazz band. sweet girl, I think she was a music teacher.

my younger son had something that wasn't the flu, but he's ok now. my mother in law caught it from him and she's not doing well.

I think it has been here for a while now and we simply didn't realize it.

I know several folks who got the "flu" and didn't test positive for the flu but their symptoms were all similar to what COVID-19 symptoms are.

I totally understand the caution being used on a spread of something that we don't know a ton about yet - but the overall fearmongering is just ridiculous.

94% of all cases thus far are reported with mild symptoms. This won't even include all those people who are asymptomatic (like the one Jazz player, not Gobert). Which probably means of all cases that are truly COVID-19 - i'm going to guess closer to 98% of all cases are mild, maybe even 99%.

6% is critical/Serious - and likely, if they are serious/critical they are seeking attention as it'll be unlikely someone is seriously ill and not get to a Dr. So, this "pandemic" is like the flu overall - but the reaction has been harsh because no one really knew what it was when it hit, and it did hit hard and fast.

In the end - the same measures being taken today are the same that SHOULD be taken for the flu. Wash your hands, limit exposure, take care of yourself - and be mindful of others - especially those who have had serious health issues recently, or have underlying health issues that could cause problems if exposed.

Also not a doctor but..

The estimates are that it's 10 times deadlier than the flu and if we don't drastically curtail its spread now it will eventually overwhelm our hospital system when it peaks.

It's also getting more and more obvious there are silent carriers, so seemingly healthy people are infecting the most vulnerable parts of our population.

It's never time to panic, as that only makes the situation worse, but this is as serious as it gets

More contagious but not deadlier than the flu.

What's ironic to me is that there are a subset of people that simultaneously yell "open the economy" and "I'm not wearing no damn mask."

If everyone slipped a mask on when they went into an indoor public place, less infection would spread, less restrictions would be placed on openings, and the economy would do better.

Go figure.

I am not a fan of the mask, but I wear it. If we had to wear helmets to resume activities why wouldn't you?

People really have no idea what it's like to actually have your freedom's stripped away. being asked by the governor "pretty please wear a mask" makes them feel like they are being persecuted by a communist regime. everyone tends to go to extremes and over-react thanks to social media.

According to numbers from the CDC towards the end of June, some 106,000 people have died with a diagnosis of COVID-19. To have the COVID-19 diagnosis, per the CDC guideline, one must present:

  • Temperature higher than 100.4°F (38°C), AND
  • One or more clinical findings of lower respiratory illness (e.g., cough, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing) AND
  • Radiographic evidence of pneumonia, OR
  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome, OR
  • Autopsy findings consistent with pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome without an identifiable cause

However, if you dig into the actual causes - only about 15,000 of those actually showed the tell-tale signs of actual COVID-19 as listed by the guidelines above. Even if you add in those deaths with listed underlying causes of general pneumonia (not acute, or found with an identifiable cause) or influenza, the total only jumps to about 45,000. Still a lot, sure as we don't want anyone to die, but it shows that the total numbers being used are inflated some 60%!

Let's also not forget to factor in that there is an estimated 45% of deaths occurring in nursing homes and affect those people who have high risks statuses - and places like NY sent infected patients to "recover" in these homes, infecting a high risk population, while keeping public transportation open (subways), and while still pushing to have their city parade...but, I digress for a moment on all of that......

We should all do our part, or do what we feel is right, but we should all also look deeper into the numbers that are provided. Numbers don't tell a story by themselves - you have to place them into context. Saying that some 106,000 people have died who have had the COVID-19 virus is misleading. While the virus may have been present, as stated above, it was NOT the underlying factor in no less than 60% of the deaths reported, and potentially up to less than 15% of the deaths reported!

As for the masks - if you want to wear one, wear one. If you don't, then don't. The actual information on most of these masks show minimal assistance in actually stopping the spread for a variety of reasons - but three that are highlighted for me are: Most people wearing them don't wear them properly (either completely loose, or not covering either the mouth or the nose), most people re-use the same masks over and over without properly sterilizing after EACH USE (I.E. each trip out should have a new masks or a sterilized masks - keeping a mask in the car or reusing the same masks over and over renders the mask useless), nor are they wearing proper masks (i.e. cloth masks, their shirt, etc...).

Cloth masks do nothing to stop viruses. Surgical masks are meant to be worn in sterile areas. Surgeons use these in highly sterile ares to prevent the physical spread of germs by talking into open wounds - not because the patient can't breathe anything else from the air. N95 masks only work as a respirator to filter out what is coming in - they are not meant to filter out what you breathe out - so if you are infected, you can still spread the virus. Also, in hospital settings, these masks are supposed to be adhered to your face by way of a negative air-pressure room that helps suction the masks to your face. I'm willing to bet that most people wearing these don't have that option.

Now, that all being said - of course stopping any part of the virus from spreading by wearing a mask is a good thing, but too many people see it as a panacea as if that is going to cause everything to be better. The spike in recent cases should have 100% been expected, masks or not. More people are out, even if following protocol 100%, it means more exposure - means more transmissions. At the height of the pandemic in April, some 150,000 test per day were going on. At the end of June, some 650,000 tests were being done. One can do the math on expected increases of positive tests; however, the death rate continues to fall to the point where as of last Friday the CDC has stated if the death rate drops again this all will be removed from pandemic status as it will no longer meet the threshold set forth by the guidelines.

my guess is, whatever vaccine comes out, won't be that effective, this thing will mutate and the vaccine will always be a year or two behind.

everyone will get this thing eventually, it's unavoidable.

I'll wear a mask so that if on the off chance someone I know came in contact with the virus and gave it to me somehow, I don't give it to you, but honestly, I feel like if I was going to get it, it would have happened on one of the many trips to my Kroger's where many patrons didn't wear a mask nor keep their distance from me.

If you can smell my farts, we aren't 6 feet a parts!!!

Are you a doctor?

No. But I can read. All credible sources say you are wrong. But I'll play along.... You give me your sources and I'll give you mine.
