Becuase that's how contracts work in the NFL. When top tier players raise the bar of what they are paid it also raises the bar of what the players under them then ask to get paid.

If the Cowboys paid Dak four hundred million dollars they are dumber than I thought

In a hard cap, I wouldn't be so convinced. It's not exactly like agents couldn't do basic arithmetic up until now in regards to the percentage of the cap. The dirty little trick is players "weren't" passing players, they just enjoyed inflation of the cap.
But a contract hasn't been done like that before, by pegging to the % of cap. So that creates a whole new dynamic. And players and their agents want to come in and beat those numbers when they have a hot commodity, not just slot in. Otherwise, why pay all that money for an agent.

I think most people would consider 20% a victory. That's still king of the QB market, especially when it's not relieved by an inflating cap, but Mahomes can kind of dictate terms here at this point. There's no serious negotiation precedent to be invoked against him.

Plus he's the biggest star in the league. The better he does the more popular the league gets and the larger the cap grows.

The agents offer legal expertise and experience in dealing with the NFL to do the busywork of the contract, moreorless. They're there to skim off of the player's value, a middle man the player accepts because the alternative is much worse in terms of exploitation from the owner. To make sure the guaranteed money is actually guaranteed and not the goofy situation we had with Okung and the Broncos a few years back.

I don't think they will do that because I don't think either party wants a 10 year deal. However I think when they previously could have gotten a deal done around 35M per year for Dak the minimum to get the deal done will now be near $37-38M per year.

Says 10 years but when the details come out maybe not locked into 10 years ? IDK wonder if Dak and his camp start rethinking wanting a short contract ?

My guess is that his annual $ is somehow tied to the market to ensure he always remains at or near the top of QB pay.

Have not seen a dollar figure yet, and that is probably why.

Still, if it is, the benchmark going forward on that contract is to hit a 35-40 million number to start, I think.

And let's say 4 years from now he's making a percentage of the cap, but a few other QB's come in and blow him away.

He's liable to get salty. We've seen it before. Players seem to stop being happy with their long-term deals when they see others pass them. He'll absolutely be a benchmark for others to leapfrog. It's rare to find the (relatively) selfless player who will take less to build a team.

I think if he were worried about that he wouldn’t have signed for 10 years.

It is a risk/reward equation. Not sure how much is guaranteed, but I would guess a lot. Otherwise why sign for so long? He sustained a fairly significant injury last season and this extension locks him into financial security even if he sustains a major injury.

I don’t think we will see another deal like this anytime soon, but the only way this is bad for Mahomes is if only a few of the years are fully guaranteed.

How long will it be before he decides he needs them to renegotiate and give him more money?

10 years is a stupid long time for him to watch the cap go up and lesser quarterbacks get paid more than him.

THAT

Or what happens if Mahomes gets broken and they would have wanted to move on.

Sure, but with Covid, the cap should be going down for the next two years. No one in the league could afford his worth.

Wow! Like I’ve said since the cousins fiasco, and I’ll say it again, unless you find a Mahomes, teams are just going to have to draft a qb every 4 years and spend the money building the rest of the team. 45 yr is ridiculous due to the cap, and with the nfl getting so involved in politics their revenue may not be as great as they’re projecting

$45M per?

Oh Dak is without question asking for $40M per now. Well played Jerry.
not really. This is like 2 contracts in one. Where in 10 years 45 mil might sadly be a low #.

Mahomes in a normal contract could probably ask for 40 mil & get it.

Still curious about the particulars?
Is all ten years realistic?
