That is the topic, on how the cap can hurt a team.
The point was about drafting well and how it impacts the cap and it is nothing but helpful with regards to the cap and probably the single most important way to stay under the cap and still have talent. I'm kind of surprised anyone would try to say otherwise. The fact that the Cowboys have had clunkers and that the draft can be a crap shoot is not the same topic at all.

This is just my opinion, but judging strictly on how Dak and his agent have pushed for every dollar they can possibly make(which is totally fine), I don't think there is any way they will accept less than whatever Mahomes yearly average ends up being, which looks like more than $40 million per year. If that's the case, I think Dan will play a year on the tag, and anything short of a SB, I think the Cowboys trade him and go a different direction. He is a really good QB but he simply isn't THAT good...

July 15th is 9 days away, and we have or will soon have Mahomes contract numbers in hand for final negotiations with Dak. I'm very excited, seems like this will be over in a matter of days, unless the Jones are going to play hardball with Dak's camp. Mahomes's numbers won't change, so there is no need to rush to the bargaining table. No matter what, there will be no team that will pay Dak above Mahomes's deal. I don't feel like the Cowboys lose in any way shape or form at this juncture. We have a top dollar, and if he asks for more - there's the door.

Meanwhile - back on topic...

If I were a betting man, I wouldn't spend much money betting on Dak getting an extension done. Hard so say how Mahomes contract is structured but I sure didn't see a 10 year deal coming. Can't imagine that Jerry or Dak did either.

10 years and $450 million for Mahomes...

I'm really curious to see how that $150M guarantee is laid out. How much is front loaded... that kind of thing. Bottom line is that if you take it at face value (which we all know better than to do), it's around $40.5M in the first year with an average 2.21% increase annually. I'm sure Dak's people are very interested in this as well.

its mainly Roster Bonuses. (Every year)
As soon as they think he isnt worth those roster bonuses Mahomes has his out to go to another team. Win/win for both sides.

Everything I've heard is the money has been pretty much agreed on and term is the hold up. Dak and his agent want 4 years cause of expected higher cap when TV deal is done. (Watson has mentioned 3 years) I think this is not Dak's agent pushing for every dollar. I heard some think the the cap could be right at 400M in 4 to 5 years with the new TV deal, gambling ect. To me, it's understandable to want a shorter deal and have another shot at big money when you're 30, 31. One thing we know about Dak, he's betting on himself. I don't think these franchise QB's are standing on every street corner.

In short...I remain squarely in Dak's corner and put this on Jerry for not having a deal done

There's no question at all that Jerry and Stephen blew this negotiation. Nearly a year ago they were telling everyone who would listen that a deal with Dak would be done shortly. Dak really took them to school. I do think however that there is a point where you win the battle and lose the war. I think Jerry has given Dak the best offer he will get to be the QB of the Cowboys

Mahomes got 10 years $503M which works out to 50.3M AAV, Dak wants the same kind of AAV

I guess we'll know soon enough. All Jerry needs to do is drop a year but I'm beginning to think both sides may be fine with the 31 plus hit this season

Yeah I think he plays for the tag number this season, just can't see them working out a deal right now, especially with Mahomes new deal now in play. Something I don't know but was thinking about is how the Mahomes contract may also effect the franchise tags for next season, since it is the average of the top 5. I have read that a second tag on Dak would run around $37 million, but I don't know if that number is locked in. Hopefully Dak will carry the team to a deep playoff run and then the money will take care of itself

I think a four year deal would have worked. For both dak and cowboys

Honestly, I think $45M per is about the higher end of what I expected for Mahomes. At least $40M was always going to happen. Anyone that expected Mahomes to come in around what the other QBs had received was nuts so hopefully this didn't take the Jones boys by surprise.

I know common sense says this makes Dak ask for more $ now, but the Cowboys may just counter with "OK, then let's do 10 years". I think everyone knows Mahomes is a special case. I think we are still somewhere in the $33M to $37M range for Dak and I'm not sure this changes things more than a tick or two. Maybe it's upped to $38M at most or maybe we throw a year Dak won't likely see unless he improves onto the back end at $45M to bring up the headline and let the agent pat himself on the back.
