Let me begin by making it perfectly clear that my ONLY connection to the NFL has been my rooting interest for my hometown team. Outside of the 16 games played by this team, NFL football is and has been absent in my home. I cannot emphasize in strong enough terms how gut wrenching this decision was to sever ties with the one thing that kept me tethered to professional football.

Understand something; I didn’t decide to leave until it became clear to me that I could no longer support Dan Snyder and unfortunately, the team that he’s associated with. As most here know, I am one, like most , who has been as vocal (written) as any other on this board when disagreeing with objectionable football decisions, futility, that comes with 20 years of bad football, heated and sometimes personal disagreements on the “Politics” board, and of course that long stand- alone debate over the name change. It seemed as if nothing would drive me away, that is until this happened…

“We, the National Football League, condemn racism and the systematic oppression of black people,” Goodell said. “We, the National Football League, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest.

“We, the National Football League, believe black lives matter. I personally protest with you and want to be part of the much-needed change in this country. Without black players, there would be no National Football League. And the protests around the country are emblematic of the centuries of silence, inequality and oppression of black players, coaches, fans and staff.”

Almost immediately after this public utterance, I took a beat to consider what was missing in a historically important statement, delivered with the blessings of his bosses and finally realizing that considering the NFL’s history, the statement did little to make people believe his sentiment. So, what else was missing? Other voices!, specifically, those of Jerry Jones, Robert Kraft, and the one team owner whose franchise is uniquely tethered to the issues that the commissioner forced out of his throat…Dan Snyder!

My move wasn’t about the political nature of these protests, nothing uttered by the commissioner changed my mind, I’m not, nor was I ever upset about any particular topic. I don’t lose control of the ability to employ reason when subject matter is uncomfortable and/or I am the only one defending my position on a given topic.

Mr. Snyder (it’s called respect) could have stepped up, as he’s done on occasion, instead of cowering behind a veil of silence, to defend his franchise. Despite the removal of the GPM memorial, renaming the lower bowl to honor Bobby Mitchell, we’ve heard nothing, pro or con, in defense of his franchise neither before nor after conceding these connections to a racist past. I’m sure that some will argue against my position citing Snyder’s right to remain silent, I’ll respect that on one condition... respect my right to hold my own.

People love this team, some love the name, others don’t, but how does a team owner, who now wants a change of culture, instill a sense of family, expect some semblance of pride and, as the commissioner said, “condemn racism,” admit that, “We were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier,” yet not consider that there would be a growing number of players and fans alike who would object to his silence?

I’m not sure if any of you remember a thread that I started, questioning whether or not Snyder should make a statement, but @dad does, and we agreed that it would become too political. It was at that time that I began making my decision to stay or go. As financial pressure mounts on Snyder, he will probably yield to that pressure, make appropriate changes with respect to the team name, but that won’t bring me back to the NFL. What will? Well, evidence that this team is not owned and operated by a coward!

i am glad you cleared that up but my faithful haters will construe that i ran you off even though you said exactly why

you wont be the only one that will give up on the NFL . i have stopped watching college sports , buying their merchandise, and such because of the educators of these schools . i am now in the process of starting a movement for this and writing universities as to why i am doing this . i dont donate to my alma anymore and have written them and told them why

you feel strongly about this issue and at this time i dont want to turn this into a political thread and be forced to move it

i am disappointed in the NFL as well and wont attend games or buy merchandise . i wont watch the national anthem or any other "version " of it . i will stream games in a matter in which they gain no profit when i watch redskins games (or whatever BS name they come up with )

in the end i may end up giving up sports altogether because its just another platform for people to shove their political viewpoint up my ass

sports shouldnt have politics in it . it should be an escape . it should be about fair competition . but now even that is stained by BS

For the record, and to everyone here @dad had absolutely nothing to do with my decision to leave.

I would love to live in a world where there was a venue that offered pure escapism. To me that world doesn't exist in real time although the exception works in the minds of those who deny real political/religious acts and imagery in sports.

Never mind that, I'm responding to let you guys know that I won't do as Snyder does. That said m, I'll remain logged on to respond to questions and other posts to this thread until it plays out.

well i am sorry to see you go for sure . perhaps you can PM me from time to time and let me know how you are doing . this relationship has been ongoing for a good 15 plus years and i like to think of you as family

i understand you have to do what you feel is right , cant blame you there

but in the next coming months things here will change to quite a bit depending on the name change . if they keep it , it should be business as usual . if the change it to warriors or braves i think you can link the history of the team and some will stay (old timers ) if they come out with some stupid ass rebrand and break from the team history like bullets to wizards then people who live in the DMV will support it and hence may come here. others wont

i most likely will still moderate the board but depending on what happens my role will change greatly . i cant see myself putting every bit of twitter , or news links , or video on a
team that i feel sold me out to the mob if its a total rebrand . i cant see setting up game threads and such for what amounts to an expansion team . i am not in the DMV anymore and my great times with this team will be
shattered if there isnt a link to the past .

so i will have to make some choices to either find a team i can get behind( steelers or KC maybe the pack or 49ers ) or perhaps i will do fantasy football or perhaps i will get into another sport like MMA

i am mulling all this in my mind but for now Sty i wish you well and keep in touch my friend

Don’t tell that to Jesse Owens, Branch Rickey, or Jackie Robinson.

Calm down Sparky. Sports has played an part of politics in this country, and will continue to do so.

Much respect to Sty and his reasoning. Hopefully, things will change, and he'll return. Whenever I saw he posted something, I was compelled to read it - moreso than anyone else's posts - and that's not a knock on anyone else.

Once Snyder changes the name hopefully Sty returns.
Having said that, it has taken Snyder 20 years to come full circle. Finally hired a real football coach and football people and seems to be letting them do their jobs. Now considering and likely a name change. Does Snyder gain some trust and respect for these moves? He owns the team, he makes the hire, he decides to change the name amid pressure or not just as in the past 20 years. If Snyder pulls this off and this team some how makes a run toward a playoff berth this year the team will have the most attention on them for sure and Snyder will have gained a bit of that respect he has lost the past 20 years from the loyal fan base and native Americans should he keep the logo in tact.

How do you keep the logo intact? I would love to, but I’m sure the non Indian liberals wouldn’t like it.

Thanks to everyone for understanding my position. It took all that I had to decide to cut the last remaining tie to the NFL. The worse part was separating from this forum. To one and all, you became family to me and hopefully I can comfortably return when there's a realization that Washington is a member of the NFL but that the NFL doesn't represent Washington. Money is driving current events, so a name change won't change my mind.
As mentioned before, I'm here until this thread plays out.

Hey bud, you and I are not on the same side of the fence, but we can all get along. Hate to see you go. That’s what’s wrong with this new way of thinking. We all can disagree with political views but in the end we’re all Americans. We need not destroy our history, just learn from it. We're all children of god. I hope you and your family are doing well.
