Would like to see if he can play SAM in this defense. I have my concerns with foot speed. Seems like a guy who would benefit rushing the passer.

I think I would evaluate him first. I am sure the coaches have watched plenty of tape and have a good idea how he will fit.

JMO he seems a little slow for SAM. Can't see him covering TEs. He did play well last year and he set the edge well. I could see him as a 1st down LBer or even DE.

Why trade him? He might be our best OLBer. He's certainly worth more to us than a 2021 5th round pick.

Might be our best OLBer based on what? He is a FA after seasons end and you will get no compensation should he walk after. Based on the crowded LB room currently, he sits on the outside looking in. Perhaps he gets reps in a "role" and likely will receive a fraction (whatever that may be) of defensive snaps this year then what? You have to decide if his compensation request will warrant keeping him inhouse. What has RA shown to date since being in DC? He is a bit slow footed, OK in space, rushes the passer well with an above avg motor.
Seems to me RA is a role player in this league due to lack of athleticism but can carve out a niche for himself. Is that worth keeping him another year or losing him for nothing? Not sure but believe the coaches will work this out.

i would question him being our best OLB for sure . i wouldnt say he isnt either but i believe SDH and holcomb can do more things and we dont know about foster yet .

i mean do you think giving him a shot is worth losing a late round pick for him ? at this point i say bring him into camp and see what his role will be . if he is a BU player he will get a BU contract

Based on his play and the other healthy LBers we have. I think those factors are kinda important :noidea:

Hamilton's always been an ILBer, and I don't picture him being sturdy enough to be a full-time player. Holcomb's a speed guy, but he doesn't seem to make any big plays. Even in college, that was a knock on him. I see the "experts" project his tackles to go way down this season. Anderson isn't a speed guy, but he has a nose for making big plays, and he's easily the best run defender of all the LBers under 37. Really hoping that things work out with Foster and his health.

SDH has the coverage skills to play outside .

From clips I have heard from RR & JDH, Holcomb has the inside edge on a starter spot based on his productivity from last year, his speed and upside, just saying.

No doubt he's fast and had a lot of tackles, but they were too far downfield, imo. I mean, he's not bad, but I think he's a reserve on most teams.

I think that’s yet to be determined . I mean he far exceeded 5th round production In year one

To be fair though, Ruz. You could probably make that criticism against every defensive player on the roster last year. If our DL turns out to be as nasty as we hope they are. A fast LB with a flair for racking up tackles could look very impressive. Unless he was being dragged downfield on those tackles of which you're speaking

Far as RA and trading him goes. On one hand I thinks everyone on the defense gets a mulligan due to very underwhelming defensive coaching we had with Gouvia n company. On the other hand we RA did make some plays last year among them being 4 sacks and 4 forced fumbles. 2 of those sacks and 3 of those FFs came in 1 game against the Eagles. I'm with @skinz2winz. If the coaches like what they see from RA, word. If they aren't moved by what they see and trade him. I'm OK with that as well.

Well yeah, I'm not saying that I know more than the coaches, but without the coaches telling us who's better - those are my opinions, fwiw. It's not like people didn't know Holcomb was fast before he was drafted in the 5th round. He's never been a play-maker.

The only similarity in the two guys is they play LB. Lets see what Jack does with them.

Agreed, different skill sets but JDR really likes Holcomb's speed and tackling ability.

Player Spotlight: Cole Holcomb Is Ready To Learn From Ron Rivera And Veteran LB Thomas Davis Sr.
Rivera and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio have both lauded Davis' intelligence and leadership. Del Rio, who said the Redskins have an "interesting mix" of linebackers, sounds anxious to see what will happen by putting Holcomb and Davis together.

"You mash [Davis] up with a guy like Cole, who played last year, was thrust into the lineup and got some valuable experience and showed some real speed and linebacking ability."

I think JDR would know a thing or two about “linebacking ability.”

I think JDR and RR might know two things or four about “linebacking ability.”
