Branson Yager

Maybe Nebraska learned from the virtual tour of Minnesota to get a recruit.

Branson Yager, 2021 Offensive tackle - Rivals.com

Utah offensive lineman Branson Yager commits to Huskers' 2021 recruiting class | News Break

Huskers Land Commitment From Utah OL Branson Yager

Offered by Academic schools, Virginia, Iowa State, and Vanderbilt.(Hey, I applied to Iowa State)

He said this,

“How the people are. The culture there and how they will treat me. If I can get along with the staff and the players. Those are the people I want to be able to be around and experience. Football won’t be fun if school sucks and I’m not happy living where I am.

I don't know much about the young man, but I like that he said that, that means he has common sense. Of course, never visiting the campus might be a red flag since he has yet to meet any of the other players. But he will fit in with the offensive line guys. All giants. How will these small QBs be able to see over the 6' 400" giants in front of them? Like sitting behind a tall person with a top hat and Husker fists on at a game, you don't see squat.

Hey all... been out of it a bit... updated the OP, also... Heinrich Haarberg pulled the trigger for Nebraska today. Looks like Nebraska will have an in state guy as their QB for this class. He's a good prospect but this does mean Nebraska was down to their 4th or 5th option at QB. This recruiting cycle has been hurt by the Corona and losing...

I don't worry about Nebraska recruiting now.

Scott Frost's strategy has always been to get the players to campus for game day since the Nebraska Game Day is pretty spectacular, compared to 100 other Division I schools.

Whereas, a school like Minnesota needs to hard sell and do virtual tours and pressure the kids to commit because their game day experience is not as good. It might get pretty good if Fleck continues his upward trajectory though. The fans in Minneapolis are not die hard Gopher fans though. If Minnesota starts losing games, the stadium will be back to 1/2 empty.

Now, if there is no season in 2020, then Scott Frost is completely screwed because there won't be any game day experiences. If that happens, then I will worry about Nebraska recruiting.

What about a reduced stadium capacity game day?

What about a reduced stadium capacity game day?

I assume most of the other schools in the B1G will be under the same rules. If they are not, then it could be bad for Nebraska.

A reduced capacity Minnesota game day experience is not the same as a reduced capacity Nebraska game day experience. Same for Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, and Northwestern game day experiences. While all are fun, they do not compare to Nebraska.

Nebraska is on par with Wisconsin and Iowa game day experience. The one thing Nebraska has is the five championship trophies, which mean less and less each year.

So Frost is going to be able to flip Avante Dickerson and other in state talent that has chosen to go elsewhere back?

You can be sure that Avante has seen many Nebraska "game days".

Where did I say anything about flipping recruits?

I am talking about the Scott Frost methodology of recruiting. He has stated that himself. He wants the recruits to see Nebraska.

Yes, Avante has seen Nebraska. Do a comparison. No school names in there, but Nebraska's side by side comparisons are not so good.

PJ Fleck
2014 8-5 had the highest rated recruiting class in the MAC, lost bowl game
2015 7-5 had the highest rated recruiting class in the MAC, won bowl game
2016 13-1 had the highest rated recruiting class in the MAC, lost bowl game
2017 5-7 first year at the school
2018 7-6 won their bowl game over Georgia Tech
2019 11-2 won their bowl game over Auburn

PJ Fleck has a proven recruiting method.
2018 PJ Fleck fired his defensive coordinator
PJ Fleck has had 5 of 6 winning seasons.
A PJ Fleck team has gone bowling five out of the last six years.

2020 NFL Draft PJ Fleck had five players drafted, One was an all American defensive back
2020 NFL Draft Scott Frost has two players drafted, both defensive lineman.

If a recruit uses those comparisons to Nebraska, why wouldn't a recruit pick Minnesota?

As always, once Scott Frost starts winning the in-state recruits will be choosing Nebraska, for the most part.

I was responding to this comment "Scott Frost's strategy has always been to get the players to campus for game day since the Nebraska Game Day is pretty spectacular, compared to 100 other Division I schools."

You've moved the goalposts on me to now include P.J. Fleck's success as being a factor.
So if Nebraska's "game day" atmosphere is not keeping local talent here from the get go, the only alternative would be to flip them on "game day" for which they've all likely seen at least one and it didn't have the desired effect.

Avante Dickerson: Minnesota
Xavier Watts: Notre Dame
Keagan Johnson: Iowa

It's a long uphill climb to get to the irrelevance that Minnesota and Iowa are. Yes, they're irrelevant.
Auburn was a Pelini-like (9-4) when Fleck beat them. They were (8-5) in 2018. Mid-major UCF beat them in 2017.
It's a considerably steeper climb for Nebraska to reach Minnesota and Iowa irrelevance if they can't keep local talent here.
