Owners and I already hate them for what they're trying to do to MiLB.

The players on the other hand want every penny owed to them when in the real world people are getting their pay cut or outright laid off. Do the players give a flying fuck about the common man? No they don't. They should be grateful they have a fucking job at all, but their "woe is me" attitude is starting to piss me off.

One of the reasons I am usually on the owners side during these things is because the owners accept most of the financial risk.

Well, the current climate falls directly under the header of “risk”. The players signed contracts. The owners signed the exact same contracts. If a game gets rained out, the players do not lose a game check. If they have to play a 163, they do not GAIN a paycheck.

I feel very Karl Marx in saying this, and hurts to my very core, but I think I am on the players side on this one. And I believe they should be paid their ENTIRE contracts. However, with that gives the owners the right to pretty much dictate how many games get played and how. If the owners schedule games, then the players need to choose if they want to play or not. If they don’t, then they start forfeiting portions of their pay.
This is from the 82-game schedule thread.

The owners reap most of the rewards when things are going well because they assume the bulk of the financial risks. Well, this is why they got paid “yesterday”. This is their rainy day. This is the “risk”.

The players are well compensated, but they sign contracts for stability. This is the trough that that stability protects against.

At this point no ones. I've seen both sides make fair proposals/have valid concerns but both the players and owners are treating this like a CBA negotiation at the absolute worst time for it.

I tended to sympathize with the players but they really lost me when they demanded the spending in free agency wouldn't be depressed. That not only can't be guaranteed with all the lost money (and it's just unenforceable) but this isn't the time nor place to be having demands on something like that.

Wow, there's three billionaires on tHoop?

I mean, I'm fairly close to @strebe's position on the matter, but I'm still pissed at the owners for trying to fuck with the minor league structure. It would pretty much take the whole MLBPA to stand up and say "fuck the fans" for me to side with ownership.

I really can't believe how we're seeing this play out. How is it that teams like the Twins, Royals and Pirates are able to pay minor leaguers yet the Yankees and Mets all of a sudden don't have the money for that? The silver lining here is incoming players will remember that when deciding who to sign with.

The players have never stood up for the minor league structure and they never will. But don't let that inconvenient fact get in the way of your very compelling story.

Ownership decided to contract the minor leagues unilaterally.

MLBPA might have something of a say in guys at the AAA level, but I'm fairly certain that the lower level guys have minimal union representation, and sure as shit aren't part of the MLBPA.

So please, since you know so much about this, please educate me on why the players should stand up for the structure, and what leg they'd have to stand on.

How minor league baseball would look under MLB’s proposed restructuring plan

They've both fucked up royally, but if I have to pick a side on this one, I'd go with the owners. The players have came across as incredibly tone deaf given the current situation of the country.

When you have a virus that that has caused millions to be out of work, athletes who make more in a year than most people will make in a lifetime won't get a lot of sympathy when they cry about money during a worldwide crisis.

The owners are equally as tone deaf, they just haven't been dumb enough to speak out about it. They're probably laughing their asses off about how the players have handled it.

Unfortunately there is only one side and it is the owners. How can a fan get mad and protest against the owners without hurting the players? That is the one negative about having professional sports unions because they think they are like private unions. Except the other pro unions realize they do not have the ultimate power and the MLBPA thinks they do because they have for half of a century.

The real losers here.

The fans' side. These whiny ass beches better figure out how to get us some beisbol soon.

again... Fans were not an option...

and how are fans the biggest losers??? its the fans that are most responsible for the sport to be dying... unless you are only talking hard core fans... and if you are... then many will watch the korean baseball... not the same... but they will get their fix whether baseball comes back or not...

Both sides are at fault but the players have handled it worse. Both have submitted equally preposterous proposals. But the players running to social media to complain about not making enough money is very cringe-worthy. And lets be honest, its the high paid players who have more say so in the MLBPA. So bottom line is you have millionaires and billionaires arguing about money which is extremely tone deaf.

This is a factor that isn't talked about much when these kinds of negotiations are going on. It is a lot easier to get/keep a handful of owners in line and on message than it is 1,200 players with varied priorities. I think that's a part of why the PA tends to "lose".
