I love baseball. I've been a fan since I was 7 years old. I think baseball has a tough time because it's hard for them to pick up adult fans. I feel like an overwhelming majority of fans became so when they were kids. Baseball is a slow sport. The ball is actually in play for only 5 minutes in a game. If you haven't grown up appreciating all the things that happen in between, then you might have a tough time loving this sport.
I tried explaining baseball to an English guy. I talked enthusiastically for 20 nonstop minutes, explaining the basics of the rules and stats and told him how important it is to understand the unwritten rules as well as the history and personality of teams. At the end, I said "so what do you think?" and he responded with "Sounds like bloody tommy-rot to me!"

To truly love baseball, you have to love all of it; the rules (by that I mean the pure National League rules), the unwritten rules, the personalities, the heat, the stadiums, the beer, the announcers and (one of the biggest for me) the stats.

Think this could be the death knell for baseball?
I don't think it'll be the death knell but it'll sure take a long time and be hard as hell to earn the fans back. They're probably in 3rd place in terms of sports popularity here, so to even leapfrog the NBA to be #2 would take a lot of effort and possibly even be a long shot at this point.

2 leagues talking about scrapping the season but found a way to finish their season while baseball stubs their toe again. The playoff teams fans will attend but for the rest of the crappy teams won't see many fans for many years.

Baseball is dying for a lot of reasons , but i don't feel like listing them all right now.

I'll just say this...there is a little to none connection between the players and fans. Most fans were disgusted when douchebags like Bryce Harper and Manny Machado actually got 300 million dollar contracts. Even though those players are talented, most fans didnt even want them on their teams. That was an interesting turn, fans don't normally care about salaries as long as it was "my" team that got the great player, but at the 250-300 million threshold, fans are just disgusted. Same with Gerrit Cole, the moment he signed that huge contract for the Yankees is the moment I started rooting against him.

The MLBPA has countered MLB's recent proposal for the 2020 season, asking for an 89-game campaign and full prorated salaries.
MLB's last offer was for 76 games at 75-percent prorated pay. The MLBPA had previously proposed a 114-game season, so the two sides are now a lot closer in terms of games played. Of course, the salary gulf isn't getting broached here, and the proposal is expected to be rejected by MLB.

The fact that Bettman could find a way and MLB can't speaks volumes.

You are talking about the guy that led 3 lockouts can work a way to finish a season but this is the nonsense we get from the MLB.

cant really compare nhl and mlb since nhl season was about over anyways ( no pay to fight over) This is mlb owners screwing the players by trying to make up for lost revenue:suds:

True about the salaries but seriously if Bettman can get a plan in place that proves any sporting league can. Too bad the owners of MLB Franchises are the worst.

SA Today's Bob Nightengale writes that MLB commissioner Rob Manfred "may have no choice but to implement" a regular-season schedule of around 50 games.
Nightengale, citing three Major League Baseball executives, says this could happen "within a week" if the owners and players are unable to reach agreement for a longer season. The union rejected MLB's latest proposal for a 76-game season at 75 percent prorated pay and countered with an 89-game campaign that would include full prorated salary shares. The owners are expected to "swiftly reject" that idea, per Nightengale, and it doesn't seem like there is much willingness to budge on either side. It's about a $900 million gap, all told. "If we don’t get an agreement real soon, this is going to be ugly," one high-ranking executive told Nightengale. "Real ugly. And it’s just going to get worse."

It was pretty funny that the Nats immediately won a WS after Harper left.

And I think he hasn't been quite right since he destroyed his knee slipping on 1B.
