Country Roads: West or Western Virginia?

The song’s refrain mentions ‘West Virginia,’ but the opening lyrics refer to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah River, which are primarily located in Virginia. The Blue Ridge Mountains are traditionally defined as the easternmost flank of the Appalachian Mountain chain, running roughly north-south from Pennsylvania to Georgia. They pass through only a sliver of West Virginia.

The Shenandoah River’s headwaters are near Front Royal, Virginia; from there the river flows northeast through Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley and ultimately into the Potomac River near Washington, D.C. Near the end of its 150-mile journey, the Shenandoah does cross the eastern panhandle of West Virginia for approximately 20 miles.

Based on the geographical references in the lyrics, many have argued that John Denver shortened “western Virginia” to “west Virginia” (lowercase ‘w’) because the extra syllable would have disrupted the cadence of the refrain.

West Virginia loyalists maintain that Denver meant exactly what he sang. Both the Shenandoah River and the Blue Ridge Mountains are part of West Virginia, and “Country Roads” has been adopted as West Virginia’s state song. Denver sang it at West Virginia University’s football stadium inauguration in 1980, and the WVU Marching Band performs it before every home game.

According to SongFacts.com, John Denver had never visited either state when he recorded “Country Roads,” his first big hit, in 1971. The song was actually written by two musician friends of his, Bill Naffert and Taffy Nifert, who drove Clopper Road on their way to Gaithersburg, Maryland. In the late 1960s, Clopper Road was a single one-lane road passing through picturesque countryside. Today, much of the road is a busy four-lane highway.

Regardless of the specific geographical references, “Country Roads” is a ballad to Appalachia’s beauty—both the beauty of the land and its people. Listen to the original song here.

While mining isn't isolated to West Virginia, that's the state most associated with it, and he references mining in the song.

Point WV.

All my memories gather 'round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye

WV. Figures that he didn't write it. It's one of the very few songs of his that I like.

Toots & the Maytals

Almost heaven, West Jamaica
True ridge mountains, shining down the river
All my friends there, older than those ridge
Younger than the mountains, blowin' like a breeze...

Country roads take me home
To the place I belong
West Jamaica..
My ol' momma Take me home country roads.

I heard her voice, in the mornin' hour she calls me
Said son you remind me of my home far away
And drivin' down the road I feel a sickness
I should have been home yesterday, yesterday

In my memories, all gathered 'round her
My mama lady swingin' through the water,
Dark and dusty painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, tears gone from my eyes

Country roads take me home
To the place I belong
West Jamaica
My ol' momma Take me home country roads

Country roads take me home
To the place I belong
West Jamaica,
My ol' momma Take me home country roads

how about this one?
'Country road' was actually in Maryland

Dear Marc:

Your first step would be leaving the state of West Virginia. Perhaps surprisingly, the inspiration for “Take Me Home, Country Roads” occurred in the state of Maryland. The “country road” was Clopper Road in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

The song was originated by Bill Danoff and Mary Catherine “Taffy” Nivert. Taffy was his wife at the time. En route to a family reunion, they were driving on Clopper Road to attend the event. Ultimately, while completing the song, they collaborated with John Denver. At that point, though Denver may have done considerable visualizing, he had never set foot or vehicle in the state of West Virginia. Similarly, neither Danoff or Nivert had ever visited West Virginia.

In his own words and on numerous occasions, Danoff has expressed his unfamiliarity with West Virginia. In his mind, the state was some distant land. It was “exotic.”

I could direct you to the precise portions of Maryland’s Clopper Road where the song composers were driving. However, I believe you would be severely disappointed unless you want to travel from West Virginia to Maryland for fast food, routine shopping and gasoline refills. What was then (1970) a reasonably scenic road is substantially wider and highly developed.

More specifically, Clopper Road starts in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Previously a single-lane entity, it currently exists as four lanes in part, two lanes in other parts, and continues to Germantown, Maryland. At present, there is little about it one could describe as “rural.” Despite the metamorphosis of the road, about one mile remains about “as is” from 1970 and before. A few semi-remnants are left. For example, the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) railroad flag stop was eventually converted to a commuter rail station. Meanwhile, a lot of Clopper Road consists of housing projects and modern highway.

As a native of western Virginia (Blacksburg) I’ve always heard it was about Virginia. I sing it all the time with memories of home in my mind. It’s God’s country out there.
