en Rosenthal and Evan Drellich of The Athletic report that the MBLPA's response to Major League Baseball's economic proposal on Tuesday will "insist" on prorated salaries.
They also report that the union will propose playing more games than the 82-game schedule that has been proposed by Major League Baseball. This comes shortly after Max Scherzer - a member of the executive sub-committee - tweeted that the players would not accept MLB's claim of financial distress without proof from the office. As Rosenthal and Drellich note, the MLBPA wants the league to honor the March agreement that the players be paid on a per-game basis with a cut that would exceed $2 billion if an 82-game schedule were to be played. One of the ideas being thrown around by the league is to be paid for an 81-game campaign but playing upwards of 100 contests, with Joel Sherman of MLB Network tweeting that they could play as many as 110. While these things can obviously come together very quickly - and will have to if they want to play starting in early July - there is much ground to be covered if that's going to happen.

Do agree financial distress proof should be provided

No, Scott Boras is/has. I mean it is job to kill the sport but still.

He's helping, but he isn't collectively bargaining a deal for the MLBPA. Tony Clark and his team are and they're getting housed on the regular by the owners.

That's why the MLBPA is desperately trying to kill the sport.

True to a point I guess but Boras routinely represents the higher paid players which is who runs the MLBPA. The owners proposal was bunk and was meant to hurt the MLBPA but Boras has been a guy that has been hurting baseball for decades....which again is his job as an agent in a non salary capped sport.

They like to think they do, but they really don't.

How so? The MLBPA is the only union I can think that looks out for the few instead of the collective. Which is why they are so pissed that the new age GM’s aren’t handing out unwarranted contracts just because it is their time. They successfully negotiated suppressing the wages of younger players so the older vets get all of the pie.

And baseball goes the way of the dodo.

This is such a tremendous fuckup I can't even put it in words. Neither sides seeing the big picture

Digging in now like this will turn the fans against you
Totally agree with you. I love the game, but if the greedy as Hell owners and greedy as Hell players can't agree on money and want to cancel their season, I can get my fix on college, HS and youth baseball. Piss on MLB

It's just incredible they're viewing this as a one season thing. Every other sport is practically unified on playing. They play the most socially distanced sport possible.

I get it's mostly about money but it's just such a bad look it will affect baseball for years to come.

its definitely a bad look to let the other sports to start before it... But to be fair, it is a lot easier to do playoffs than starting a new season...

just like how there have been basketball players who have publicly said, they don't want to play in meaningless games... Baseball has that problem... to start a season, with the knowledge that there will always be teams not competitive... why would they want to "risk" their lives for a partial pay check... and it is not just their lives, it is also their lifestyle and families lifestyle...

I think it is hard for us to imagine why people who make so much money even in a partial paycheck would act like this... But you have to realize players that make 10+ million don't need the money like we do... they can stand on principle...

I don't understand why people are surprised about this... so much easier to talk playoffs than the regular season...

Sure it is. But surely you see the difference in the relationships there.

The MLBPA has submitted their proposal to Major League Baseball.
As expected, the MLBPA does not back down from a refusal to accept a revenue-based system. The proposal calls for a 114-game season; up from the 82-games proposed by MLB in their outline. It also would allow salaries to be deferred for up to two years if there is no postseason due to another shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The plan also would expand the playoffs in both the 2020 and 2021 season; something that has been discussed to increase revenue for the sport to make up for the lost games and lack of fans in stadiums. Perhaps the most significant part of the proposal calls for any player being able to opt-out of playing, but only players that are considered "high-risk" would be paid and the rest would be credited only with service time. Jeff Passan of ESPN also reports that the proposal would call for the season to begin on June 30; earlier than the MLB suggestion of early July. It's a vastly different plan from the one suggested by the owners, but at the very least there is now something from both sides to continue the serious negotiations that will have to take place if there's going to be a season.

well, of course there is a difference between unions...

But owners need to cave... the players are the ones that are taking all the risk, potentially dramatically changing their way of life and families lives....

Not a chance in fuck I'd work for what the owners are offering and neither would any of you.

Say your contract is for 35K. Half your work days at home half on the road. Now 100% of your work days are on the road and you get 7.8K. With no definite start or end date. Not even a definite location or an assurance you will get to see your family. Nobody would do that.

Cuz that's the scenario for a guy with a GUARANTEED $38 million deal this year.

I agree... People just look at these players and say they are being paid to play a kids game... and they don't care that its the owners that need to compromise... not the players...

It's annoying.

We'd all play for free, for like a week. Maybe two.

They moved on money once, willingly and in good faith. Sometimes a buissness has to take a hit to make payroll. This is one of those times. Or MLBs death speeds up.
