Hey, the draft is in a couple of weeks! Something to discuss, sorta.

Dates: June 10 at 4:00 pm PT, round 1. June 11 at 2:00 pm PT, rounds 2-5.

So far the Giants have been linked mostly to Mick Abel, a high school RHP, and Tyler Soderstrom, a high school catcher, with their first pick.

That would be interesting to see Soderstrom, if only because his dad was drafted 27 years ago (wow, that is weird because I remember that draft) by the same team. His dad never panned out though.
However, I don't know why the Giants would go 1st round, in an abbreviated draft, on a prep catcher. Is he projecting to be the best available pick at 13?
By the way, I had started a 2020 Draft thread in early April.

Didn’t Steve Soderstrom end up having a middling journeyman career? (Not really interested in the answer as much as the discussion seeing as it is a very easy thing to look up, which I am not doing)

And a bit of a flex, showing off that I knew his dads name without having to look anything up.

(@calsnowskier can you merge this thread into LGH's)

On a serious note, from what I've read not many people project him to be a catcher in the majors, with his mostly likely position ending up at 3rd base, but Zaidi likes these types of guys. I'm sure he'd love to have Bart and Soderstrom rotate between manning the corners and catching (Bart to 1st base, Soderstrom to 3rd base when not catching).

His bat does seem to be what people are excited about, ultimately.

It's not an apples-to-apples comp by any means, but the Cubs drafted Schwarber as a catcher because of his bat, pretty much knowing full well he wouldn't stick there.

For me, obviously going with the best player available, but I really got to think they need to look at a pitcher. Their system is extremely lopsided right now.

Not even that. I remember he appeared briefly in the big leagues but when I looked him up the other day, I was reminded it was just 3 September starts with the Giants in 1996. I remember being a teen from Fresno, upset that the Giants weren't giving more chances to their 1st round pick from Fresno State when lesser guys were given more chances. But looking up his numbers in AAA, he wasn't that good. He looked awful in 1997. He actually pitched decently, for PCL standards, in 1998 (best starting pitcher in Fresno outside of a young Russ Ortiz and maybe journeyman Chris Brock) but wasn't given a call up at all that year. That year had me made at how he was skipped over for veteran minor leaguers who looked worse in AAA. He flamed out with the Giants' org in 1999 after another awful season in AAA. Then he spent a yeare struggling with the Reds' AAA squad in 2000, calling it quits after that season.

Draft is tomorrow! Some some real baseball news to consider.

Soderstrom seems to be the hot pick at the moment still.

Very difficult for me to get at all excited about this draft. I will be treating this draft similar to how I treat the nba draft. I will casually look at the positions drafted, maybe read a report or two, then move on and forget about it 2 weeks later.

Yeah, I feel like that's most people's thoughts right now. Hard for me not to get geeked up about the draft, I even feel the same way.

Consensus so far is that the Orioles and Marlins are doing the teams below them a favor

Hmm, no high schoolers taken yet. Giants were mostly connected to high school players pre-draft, so maybe this bodes well for them.

Giants are in a pretty good spot here, can guarantee they're picking a high schooler. Will it be Soderstrom, Abel, Bitsko, Howard?
