How did they not get a trade done. Even if they only got a 6th round pick for him, they could have traded for something.

Cam Newton is still unsigned and Winston just signed a one year contract as a low paid backup.

Dalton was cut because there was absolutely no trade market for him.

if he was traded we would have to agree to whatever portion of his 17 million the other team was unwilling to pay.

so, if the other team only wants to pay him 7 million, we would have to pay the other 10 million.

by releasing Dalton, this is not our problem anymore, it's Dalton's agents problem.

Agreed. I think they tried, but it's hard to get a team to give you anything with all the interesting free agents that were available. The only move that didn't make any sense was Chicago giving up something for Big Dick Nick.

I have a hunch that Bengals fans will look back fondly on Andy Dalton. He was the qb of the franchise during a period of time that they had more sustained success than they have had at any other time in the history of the franchise. I also can't remember a single negative comment or behavior that put the organization or city in bad light (I'm not talking about his performance here). And, my bet is that he'll continue to give the city money through his foundation and refuse to say bad things about Mike Brown and the Brown family. Cincinnatians are suckers for athletes that don't have opinions.

It's amazing to me now how much fans still like Boomer Esiason. I remember sitting at games before the super bowl season and about 2 years after the super bowl season and fans wanted to run the guy out of town. People clamored for Donald Hollas for gods sakes. And there really wasn't any outrage when the franchise selected David Klingler.... Confursion maybe, but now outrage. And Boomer hasn't really stopped telling the truth about the Bengals or the Brown family since he left.... Sometimes in a somewhat mean way. Yet, people behave like he's part of the fabric of Cincinnati. Memories are weird is my point.

One caveat here.... If Joe Burrow comes in and wins playoff games within his first 4 seasons and takes the team to another super bowl, nobody will even remember Dalton existed.

It was a strange ride, no doubt. 5 straight playoffs, but then a few really bad playoff games, plus the "what could have been year if 2015". Always felt like he would win you games, but then the circumstances had to be just right. He was perfect at being average, and yet his stats are impressive.

Just 1 of 6 QBs since 2011 to throw for 30k yards, 200 TDs, and win 70 games. Others are Brees, Rodgers, Brady, Ben, and Ryan. That's a pretty nice group to be included with. However, again, each of those other QBs seemed like they could win you a game when the chips were down and against them. Dalton always seemed to take advantage when things are going well, but rarely seemed like he could be that kind of QB that won you games inspite of those circumstances.

I fixed it.

Believe it or not, I am still a moderator on this page. Though, I'm not sure I've moderated anything in a long time.
Well, I mean - who can blame you. Watching us set up those confrontations at the Dayton Mall were worth it! (and thanks for the fix)

Nick Foles to the Bears only worked because it was the perfect set of circumstances. He played for their HC, he knows the system, the team is in a win now mode, and Foles can function in either a starter or backup role.

It started last year with Tannehill (former high 1st rd pick and solid resume) taking a backup role. There's not a huge market for veteran starting QBs right now.

IF they were going to trade Dalton - last year was the year to do it before the deadline and then roll with Finely the rest of the way leading to Burrow.

Once they held on to him, it was going to be apparent he would be cut with the amount of QB's that were going to be on the market.

I think if Jax will give him a shot to start - he ends up there, but I still like N.E. as well. BB has always liked Dalton, IIRC.

I'll be interested to see how this plays out over the years. It's obvious that the best situation is to get a franchise guy that is on a rookie contract for 5 years. That cap flexibility, paired with an all-pro type passer is an easy recipe to deep playoff run or super bowl (see Chiefs this season). The worst place to be is to have a second or third contract player that makes enough to keep you from building your roster, but not good enough to carry an average roster. So, if you don't have the franchise guy - Or if your franchise guy now costs more than he produces, guys like Tanehill and Dalton suddenly become attractive options for the short-term.

I think Belicheck might be tempted to tank a little this year. He can redesign that roster and rebuild in a radical way given his commitment from ownership.

Well, it has to either be an all-in tank for Trevor, or he's going to think he's smart enough to win without TB. If I were wagering - I'd bet on the latter. I don't think it would sit well for him to try, and end up losing, and then having people question if the last decade+ was more about TB than it was about BB.
