my favorite line form the article, ted williams, upon his promotion to the big leagues:

Williams had been to camp with the Red Sox in 1938, so the Boston media already knew the brash youngster. After his big season at Minneapolis, the anticipation built even more for 1939, and Williams provided plenty of good copy to the local writers.

One writer asked Williams: "You think you'll hit up here?"

Williams' response: "Who's going to stop me?"

The Acuna hype was the most I can remember. Heyward and Francouer were also highly anticipated

Oh, it's terrible. I found some on a drive to LA, maybe 2 years ago? Of course, I had to get it. It's like motor oil and non-alcoholic fernet-branca.

The Mariners one is BS, the most hyped prospect in their history was Ryan Anderson. He was hyped as better than Randy Johnson. Griffey and ARod were hyped as stars but not essentially guaranteed as the best at his position like Randy was for half of his career.

Not sure how a player who never got above AA could be the most "hyped" player in Yankee history?

I mean, you had publications that declared Phil Hughes was going to be the next 300 game winner.

Just saying.....

For the Pirates quotes:
"Kris [Benson] hits his spots so well, you could catch him with a Styrofoam cup." -- James Beavers, Benson's summer league coach in high school

Except for his wife.....

Seriously they missed on the overhyped Chad Hermansen. Unfortunately, he never could hit, field or play baseball in general.

Anderson was never ranked as a top 5 prospect (best he did in BA's ranking was #7) and was the 19th pick when he was drafted. A-Rod by comparison was baseball's #1 prospect (and also #4 in a another year), and was the #1 overall draft pick.

Not sure how you can claim that a guy that was the #1 overall pick and #1 ranked prospect wasn't hyped as a someone who would be the best at their position.

The Randy Johnson comp was as much about him being 6 foot 10 and lefthanded as it was about his ability. A-Rod appeared on BA's list twice and was #6 and #1. Anderson was thought of very highly but never got above #7. I get that we're kind of splitting hairs here and BA's word certainly isn't gospel but it's a good indicator of "hype" I think. I'm good with them not choosing Anderson.
