Prior to the CFP I remember Wisconsin beating Nebraska something like 70-30 in the B1G CCG one year. Sorry Husker fans but it was a crummy CCG I remember.

Hey, it was one hell of an exciting first 5 minutes of game time.... after that, not so much.

Yeah, there have been several lopsided CFP semifinal games. I'd expect to see some lopsided CFP quarterfinal games as well.

All that said, we've also seen several very lopsided CCGs in the CFP era as well. Bigger routs than some of the CFP semi slaughters...and I don't see any cries to eliminate CCG because there could be some routs. As long as they make money, they'll tolerate routs.

Some CCG routs that stand out are:

'14 Ohio State 59 Wisconsin 0
'14 Alabama 42 Mizzou 13
'14 Oregon 51 Arizona 13
'16 Washington 41 Colorado 10
'17 Clemson 38 Miaimi 3
'17 Oklahoma 41 TCU 17
'18 Clemson 42 Pitt 10

There's not much of a downside to adding an CCG but adding auto-bids and expanding the playoffs you are taken away the importance of OOC games and big time upsets. Now teams like OU and Clemson can coast through the season even more without any worry of slip-ups costing them

Eight teams makes sense because of math (Five conference champions, highest rated G5, two wild cards) but even with just four we're having a tough trying to figure out who the fourth team is, and that debate is really who has the honor of getting blown out by the #1 team.

huh?

Are you saying that expanding the playoffs would take away from OOC upsets? It literally adds more chance for them and given that the OOC teams are making an expanded playoff, it means you won't get to play Mercer or Citadel and actually would have to play at least somewhat decent OOC opponents. And all things considered, OOC regular season games aren't that important anyway, so how would it make them less important. They are only important in terms of being undefeated for national title purposes in which case they are equally important to those that would be played in the expanding playoff.

With few exceptions, most P5 teams most difficult games are in conference every year and those games would still be played all the same and actually matter.

Be honest. What percentage of posters here on SportsHoopla would watch all the playoff games if it was expanded to 8 teams?

That's right, about 99% of us. We all love college football and we would all be eager to see (a) interesting match ups and (b) lightening strike if a low ranked team got hot at the right time and made a run.

Conferences already have CCGs. Who said anything about "adding" a CCG? Just because some of the CCGs aren't competitive doesn't mean anyone is wanting to get rid of them. Same for CFP semis. Like was stated, if we are worried about lopsided games then we need to do away with the cupcakes like my Miners...and some conference games as well. There are a shitpot full of games that aren't even close every season. "Lopsidedness" shouldn't be the deciding factor as to whether to expand the playoffs or not. Or even contract them for that matter. We all know what the deciding factor in all this is...and that deciding factor is M-O-N-E-Y.

Exactly why the traditionalists do not want to risk such happening. If we keep those pesky teams that started out poorly out of the equation, we don't have to risk them performing exactly as you describe. Cinderella only belongs in March Madness and other college sports. Not CFB.

Go look at FCS and tell me if this holds true. Tell me, how many different school’s have won a title in the past 8 years?

Save for 2014 and 2017, there have been teams in 5 through 8 that would have matched up better and done better than the 4 seed.

People railing against expansion because the 4 got blown out are delusional. It’s about matchups.

Hey dumbass,

Why don't we wait until we get four teams that are actually worthy of being in the playoff because to date that hasn't happened? I'm not interested in adding more shitty games to the playoffs let them play those in the bowls.

4 team format works and until it doesn't no need to change.

Nah, but here's the thing see? There might be a big gap between teams 3 and 4, but there won't be too much of a gap between 4-8. So after doing some quick maths, we might actually get two or three decent games out of an expanded playoffs. Sure, the 1/8 matchup might get ugly most years, but we already have that anyway. 4/5, 3/6, and possibly 2/7 in some years might be halfway decent. Either way we get four more games.

What happens when the AD’s realizes this loses money in the long run for their mediocre squads? When no fans want to go to the Peanuts and Crackerjack Bowl and half the roster sits out?

They will seed the teams and the first round will be a shit show.

It's already a shit show, isn't it? As you and others keep pointing out, 2/3rds of the games every year have been awful. With four more games, you have four more chances to get some decent games.

Better chance by just throwing their ass in the bowl pool.

Fine, I'm happy to go back to the pre-BCS bowl set up.
4 team playoff works. Best system we've had to date so we just need to stick with it until we have 5 undefeated P5 teams (ok SEC can have 1 loss).

I think that most years, there are 1 or 2 great teams, but I like the games.

That doesn't mean that it will be the same in years to come.
You disenfranchise at least an entire conference every year, and I think people want more. They want to see it on the field no matter the outcome. Call it fairness, call it whatever, but you can't just disregard an entire conference.

Worked out so far. Idk if I'm ready to water down the regular season just for the small chance of 5 teams going undefeated
I’d rather go back to the BCS personally. Same conflict existed and the other bowls meant more
