Yes, I understand the Math. In your example his year 4 cap hit would be $38M and years 1-3 would be $32M. If it were structured like that we could cut Dak after 3 years and owe him nothing and have only $4M in dead money. So he would have signed a 3 year deal for $33M per if we want out or if still a good deal for the team we get him for year 4. I don't think he does that. The teams are getting craftier and very seldom is the salary the same each year but who knows

I would guess his SB is probably $25M and split over 4 years unless Dallas pulls a stupid Howie movie and splits it over 5 (I think the new CBA was supposed to do away with that?). Usually the first two years are the only ones guaranteed at signing. The 3rd year may guarantee in March of 2021 or something. Also popular in the big deals are roster bonuses in outer years that may be guaranteed as well and push out the cap allocation. So in your example maybe a $7.7M salary and a $20M bonus in year 2. But the key will be what is originally reported as guaranteed vs what really is as we all know. Wentz's contract is a good example of this or even Coopers.

I fully agree teams do some wizardly math with annual salary, I'm just throwing out a basic contract structure on how I'd try to get him in. Those guys writing contracts are much wider than me.

I've still yet to hear either side say Dak wants to be the highest paid QB, maybe he does. What I have heard both side directly say is it's the length of the contract where they're at odds. I think it's time Dallas just gives into that demand. I'd go higher than Wentz average at 4 years, or tell him get ready for two years of Franchise Tags.
I'd offer 4 years 33 per with three years guaranteed.
Everything that I have heard is that they have agreed to $35 million a year. Holdup is number of years

I mean..IF he is clean...he is a huge talent

Completely agree... although the only concern I have is what he has in the tank. As far as “clean”, Glazer seems to think he’s got that part of his life together.

Un phukin real. A blurb on my phone popped up. I could only see half. Former 49er Andin Smith, who hasn't been in the NFL since 2015....

My mind went through 3 thoughts of what the story was before I clicked.
1. Arrested for _____.
2. Reported missing and possibly endangered.
3. Dies due to corona virus.

Only Jerry brings this guy back from the junk pile.

Dude had 19.5 sacks in a season. Half that is better than what Quinn did. Worth the low risk

Other than the low risk, I don't like this.

If it’s the same guy from 4 years ago, neither do I. That guy was an absolute mess. And - 4 years is a LONG time to be away from the game... I don’t care what position you play. I do respect Jay Glazer though... especially due to his work with vets and bringing in players that participate in that work. He seems to think the cat has his act together. So - we shall see... for $2M.

So does this rule out a Randy Gregory return?
No, I dont think so. I got my fingers crossed that Smith and Gregory stay out of trouble if and when they are reinstated. Gregory is still under contract for 2 years I think. We are talking cheap contracts for two damn good pass rushers

Jim Tomsula is one of Smith's former coaches. I would imagine that is why the signing happened. I honestly was shocked to see this happen. Jerry seems to sign players like this one about every 5 years
But, Garrett's "right kind of guy" did not bring results, so maybe Smith does something.

Well, interesting. I guess for $2M we just see what happens? I'm done with a bunch of these marginal DL we roll through over and over every year so I'm not worried about giving him someone's roster spot and for $2M I'm not worried about the cap impact or it preventing us from signing someone else. The issue here seems to be character and whether or not he is bad for the team chemistry or gives us a black eye if he hasn't changed. I'm guessing there is not a lot of guaranteed money and also that this guy on a personal level probably needs money so perhaps that keeps him in line. Maybe we get an idea once OTAs eventually start up...whenever that is...

As I read it last night, it is $2M salary... $2M in heavy incentives and $0.00 guaranteed.

His Base Salary is 910K (only 300k more vs NFL min)
per game bonus is $40,625 (650k if he plays whole season)

his actual bonuses
Reinstatement bonus 90K
30 day after reinstatement 50k
Training camp bonus 100k
2 preseason games 100k
Week 1 bonus 100K
So if he ends up not making the team he would count zero to the cap since he would be less than the top 53.

Incentive bonuses
8 sacks 500k
10 sacks 1 mil.
12 sacks 1.5 mil.
14 sacks 2 mil.

If he is hitting any of the incentives this will be a helluva signing.

If it doesnt work out. We move on with no damage to the cap (one bottom rung player loses his job is the casualty in the signing)
