Finished it a couple days ago, at least season 4. I assume Amazon is going to make more.

They signed up for season 5 before Season 4 was finished production. 5 more books to go so plenty of material.

the universal praise this show gets might be all that Amazon needs from this show. For the streamers, positive press is as good as ratings. Especially for the non-Netflix streamers trying to topple the king.

The Expanse was a victim of a really weird distribution deal that SyFy had for the show. Not to get into the details, but SyFy basically only had 1st run rights. And with a show like Expanse that is no good.

Amazon owns full rights to the show. And when Amazon execs see this...

And, to be honest, the book that Season 4 was based on was the least interesting book in the series. They did a great job of keeping the story pertinent and not ignoring the larger story completely, which the book did.

Not to give anything anyway but shit gets absolutely crazy in the next book. Something happens that will be absolutely shocking and I cannot wait to see how they will show it in the show.

But better shows than this have been cancelled for worse reasons.

I think the metric for show cancelation are different now, in the streaming world, than they were back in the broadcast world.

I don’t think Firefly would have been cancelled in today’s environment.

They all cost money.

As a rule they all have to make money.

I think that they can identify the target audience much more precisely today than they could 15/20 years ago. And if you know EXACTLY who is consuming your product, you can use it more effectively. And if a certain show is getting great word of mouth (like Firefly had), they can use that in targeting the demo of that particular show.

I may be wrong. I really don’t know how they determine which shows to promote and which shows to let wither and die. And how do they know which shows are adding to the bottom line and which are not. These are ad-free, subscription service companies, after all. Each incoming dollar is general and not specifically linked to any specific product.

I do know that when Firefly had its run, it had to each valuable broadcast time. That is not the case in streaming. Word of mouth also did not carry AS MUCH weight as it does today. If you missed a firefly broadcast, you missed it. Today, you just call it up. Easy-peasey.

Just binged this past weekend and have started Season 4.
Pretty good.

David Straithairn in a weird role, but the horseshoe mustache works for him.
I wish he would have some scenes with Shohreh Aghdashloo, who is a real gem in this.

I liked Naomi better with the mohawk.
Action scenes are a bit flat, but the political intrigue is very well done.

Would absolutely recommend.
