Got to give these guys a couple of games to get ready. I honestly rather see the season get cancelled instead of going right to the playoffs.

A week and half or 2 weeks of regular season basketball is all they need. 5 games at maximum.

I can live with everything else but can't jump straight to the playoffs IMO

I tend to agree. With roughly 17-18 games to go, in the east the 8 are already set more or less, but not so in the west as less than 4 games separate the 8 and 9 teams.

I like the overall concept of the OP's plan, but not jumping directly to the playoffs.

grizz are 1 game under .500. The 9th team just needs to pack up and go home. they won't get closer

Probably so, but still only 4 back in the loss column.

I tend to agree the 8th team is not advancing very far in the NBA playoffs.

If the NBA is doing playoff, for the Pistons sake I want a second site tank off for the others. The Piston s were well on their way to tanking to the #2 or #3 latest record and were cheated by the shortened season.

16 team tournament (8 from eastern conference / 8 from the western conference) all the rounds except the championship will be a single elimination game. The championship will be a best of 5 series.

I'm for it.

I think they should take down the number of games in a series too. 3, at least 5. Or take down the number of teams to 8. Or both.

I vote for Maui. Maui is doing pretty well against the virus and they could use the economic infusion of a couple hundred millionaires on their island.

Yeah, definitely possible to somehow shorten things. Will depend on when they are able to start.

Would say we need the full best of 7 for conference Finals and NBA Finals though

Can’t do that.

single elimination is great for March Madness. Not for the NBA playoffs.

I'm up for it but...I have a hard time seeing exhibition games being held for some reason.

Lets say they were to get all this sorted out by the middle of May, 2-3 weeks of training camp, practice, etc. No exhibition games. Then about the 2nd week in June the playoffs start on a neutral court. Players, coaches, officials, all faculty tested before every single game. Then we would likely have the NBA Finals in August, possibly September at the latest.

@tlance

Right now on Speak for Yourself, Whitlock was just talking about doing something like your idea in Vegas since it's all shut down anyway.

was gonna say I'm down with any plan that allows the Cavs to stay in the spot near the bottom that they "earned".

with the plan you have in place hard to say "can't do that" to any reasonable idea. Before all this happened would anyone believe neutral site would be great for NBA playoffs?

Of course neutral site is not ideal. But it is better than not playing the games at all.

What does it matter if there aren’t fans attending anyway?

Still an advantage playing at home, but sounds like a lot of unnecessary travel to me.

And the use of multiple venues exponentially increases the risk of Coronavirus impact.

Yes, I will say it.

cant do single elimination in the NBA. That would completely butcher the tradition of playoffs. NBA playoffs aren’t designed for wild upsets.

Not my point. Not against neutral site at all if that is what needs to be done. But you said "single elimination great for March Madness, not the NBA."

would hope if they play they can have longer series but if it's single games or nothing?

But they are designed for neutral site and no fans in the stands? These are different times...they can do whatever they need to get it done.

Nobody is going to fly for that. Just cancel the season if you're going to do that crap.

Yep, it's changing the nature of the sport. Neutral sites don't.

Yeah, can’t see how it would ever get to that point.

Would be better to extend the current season to October than play single elimination. And if they get pushed past that, they aren’t playing.

Imagine the asterisk that would come along with a single elimination tournament.
