Tough leaving Rosey Brown off that list.....
My bad, was thinking offense also.....

Lambert played the MLB spot and Ham OLB...we're probably splitting hairs as to which one was better. Ham was probably the most consistent, he could cover and play the run. I just remember more splash plays by Lambert is all.
Yes, of the post 80s era...Troy is the one guy that I think every Steeler fan would pick.
Agree, both were fantastic, Lambert did all the dirty work up the middle and Ham was sideline to sideline with great tackling skills and tremendous in coverage...Ham was more athletic and Lambert was more of an intimidating presence.....As for Blount, he was a force, they changed rules because of him...they just stopped throwing to his side of the field after he won DPOY....

Zeke Smith
Tracey Rocker
Takeo Spikes
Derrik Brown
That's what I remember about those days as well. It was also the days of much more run heavy offense and what people remember most about Lambert was him filling the hole and blowing up RBs. I think even the fullbacks were a little intimidated by the dude.Lambert played the MLB spot and Ham OLB...we're probably splitting hairs as to which one was better. The 2000 Baltimore Ravens are the Mount Rushmore of defenses. And I don't like Baltimore.

Good one.
For me...I could go all 70s players, but Troy was transcendent.
Joe Greene
Mel Blount
Troy P
Lambert or Ham...tough call, but I went Lambert.
I would pick those exact 4 as well, Lambert over Ham as well.
The gist I've gotten from the 85' Bears is that they aren't clearly the best defense but they are the best elite defense that also had a decent offense. Footballoutsiders had the 85 Bears as the 5th best offense in the league. Bears were 2nd in points scored. Darn good team. That would be very challenging but taking a stab at it.
In no particular order
PIT '78, BAL '00, CHI '85, NYG '90
Hon. mention TB '02

Baltimore 00 is the best modern run defense ive seen. Tampa 2 is the best modern pass defense ive seen. Both of those offenses were pretty subpar/bad for their era.
FWIW, footballoutsiders also has the '74 Steelers as the best Steelers defense. I can't really speak too much to that because my knowledge of that era is very limited.

Good stuff.
I go with the '85 Bears because they were so dominant with that Buddy Ryan front....they seemed to feed off the hype going into the playoffs and just steamrolled to and through the SB....they actually followed that up well....with a hodge of QBs ending with Flutie getting beat by the 'Skins.
PIT...'74...I can believe it...I was a young teen myself for the 1st two SBs and they clearly carried Bradshaw... the '76 DEF was awesome...the team got off to a slow start that year, and were 1-4 or something like that and then the DEF turned it up...3 or 4 shutouts in a row, at least 3 or 4 other games with 10 or less points scored...made the playoffs, but they got beat in the 1st rd...anyway...no ring, no glory, but that was a helluva DEF.
If you consider Deion a Cowboy, he has to be there IMO. Otherwise I like your 3 plus DeMarcus WareBob Lilly
Randy White
Mel Renfro
tough call on #4
Harvey Martin
Cliff Harris
Darren Woodsen
Lee Roy Jordan
Chuck Howley
Was that the game where Tennessee ran up and down the field and didn't score any points?Didn't 2000 Tenn have a better dvoa than the 00 Ravens?

Top offense and defense in the NFL is impossible because the sample sizes, especially with the playoffs, are way too small. Its much easier to do that kind of thing with the NBA. Best this and best that. In the NFL, its really all about the best team from top to bottom.
76’ was their best D, bad start as you mentioned, win 9 straight, 5 shutouts during that stretch, allow 28 points in those 9 games......But no cigar with RB’s out vs Raiders.....Destroyed Colts in first round
