I play Axis & Allies WWII Global 1940 on a 6ft x 3ft game board. Play about 3 times a year with son, father-in-law, brother-in-law. Takes about 2 days to play.

A&A was our go to game back in the 80s. I bet we had fifty dice each of red, white and green for the battles.

That does look awesome.

My wife's family played board games often and had a huge book shelf in the living room. While my family played them occasionally, we were more of a card game family with Rook, Phase 10, rummy, etc. Sort of an interesting welcome to her family to play almost every night I'd visit and receive them as gifts.

At my house now, you'll find a mixture of the two. We have a closet dedicated to board and card games, as well as, puzzles. We'd play something on a regular basis previously, but have really increased the amount of game nights/puzzle days since COVID has had us home over the last month+.

I started playing in the late 80s. It has evolved a lot since then. 9 countries instead of 5. They added 6 more unit types to the game.

The last time I played it, we had the 1942 version. I bought the game for PC to play it online but right after that the website folded. I love that game.

What is the Automobiles about? Racing?
Yeah, there is a racetrack that has spaces that are color coated to gears (3rd gear, 4th gear, etc) that you need to be in to drive on those spots. As you drive, you accumulate wear based on how fast you go unless you're exactly one spot behind someone else.

Each gear is represented by a colored cube. You put them into a bag at the end of your turn along with the wear you've accumulated and you shake it up and take out your cubes randomly for your next turn. There are also special abilities like Boost, Turbo, Pit Crew, etc that add different colors into your 'engine' and they give abilities that allow you to move faster or remove Wear.

Its fun with 3 or 4 players and moves pretty quickly because you can plan your turn out while other people are playing. You can even play it with 5 players but the map gets a bit crowded. Not ideal for 2 because the racetracks are fairly large and one of the interesting things in the game is blocking or drafting behind other players and that dynamic is mostly absent from a 2 player game.

The game has a wide variety of special abilities and that adds a decent amount of replay value. I do think that there are a couple of abilities that aren't all that fun so you might run into some balance issues here and there. I also think that there is a disconnect with the theme as you're building your engine while you're driving. Its also not the best looking board game and it can be easily spruced up if you have some Micro Machines laying around.

That said, I've played the game about ten or eleven times and thats pretty good for a board game.

Game sounds like a bit more in depth version of the game Formula D.

Nice to see board games are still around.
party games are pretty big right now and there is a whole new world of kickstarter games out there. It's actually pretty cool.

there are plenty of simple games like Ticket To Ride that is easy to pick up and a lot of fun to play.

I haven't played Formula D but Automobiles mechanics are an offshoot of the Dominion style deckbuilder with a board.
