Oh i bring up 40 yard dash times because a free safety tends to play 10-12 yards off the ball and in the Hawks it's normally single high in the middle. the Football field is a little over 50 ( 53.33 yards ) yards wide ( 26.66 yards from center to edge ). So lets say a pass 20 yards down the field on the edges forces the Safety to flip and run, the average ground he has to cover on those type of plays is 30-40 yards. So yes i use 40 yard dash very much in grading out my Safeties. Hawks were one of the worst at giving up explosive pass plays last season. Passes 20 yards or more.

Good points. I will say though that sometimes a 40 yard dash can be a bit misleading. I was shocked that Taylor Rapp was running like a high 4.7 or something like that in his pro-day for UW. There are a lot of guys who make up for their lack of straight line speed simply through anticipation and instincts. If you're slow to react/diagnose a play it won't matter if you run a 4.3 IMO.

Also for what it's worth I think that a lot of the 20+ yard completions were credited to Flowers and when we had Tedric Thompson at FS.

We all love KJ but he looked slower than normal. He's been a staple for many years but at some point we need fresh legs back there. Let's see what Barton can do with more playing time.

I agree. K.J. Wright IMO last year was league average. If I'm the GM I just can't justify a $10m cap hit for an average linebacker on the wrong side of 30 when we drafted Cody Barton in the 3rd round and by all accounts impressed in camp and preseason. I think the worst case scenario is that Cody Barton is worse than K.J. Wright was in 2019, but we still save $7.5m that could be invested in the defensive line.

More I think about, I think I agree. K.J. gets either traded or released. Most likely cut. The Seahawks really need the cap space it would supply and they have player on the roster that seems capable of replacing him. Not to mention the draft usually has a good supply of LBs. So think surely he becomes a cap causality.

Until Seattle shows that they want to run with 3 CBs instead of LBs more often, isn't Barton already slotted to be the starter with the departure of Kendricks? So, this isn't an either or, but most likely both already looking at playing time. Right now, I estimate a possibility to be looking for up to 6 starting spots (depth not included) and parting ways with Wright could bring that up to 7. I just can't see the Seahawks parting ways with a healthy productive player when they have so many question marks coming into the season. It just seems less loyal than they've shown in the past. Just my observation though.

Agreed, this team has SO many Free agents you almost can't toss players off the squad that are still productive. Yes sure toss them if they are not productive but with SO MANY MISSING PIECES you almost have to keep the ones under contract that are still performing. If KJ was cut he would be a starter somewhere else, can the Hawks afford to throw away starting talent? No not right now they can not on a team lacking starter talent. Sure KJ is no longer a probowl player but you know what there are 90+ starting LBrs in the league and most of them are not probowlers lol. Barton, Wagner, Wright and look for some more talent at LBer in this the 2020 and the 2021 draft because Wagner is not getting any younger also. Also i feel like KJ is one of the smartest players on this team. Would love to see him as the Hawks LBers coach in the future.

Diggs recognition is spot on and i would say the best on the team for safeties, but his speed is a little slow for a safety. Man i wish he could run a 4.40 40 or was 4 to 5 inches taller he would be a stud! He JUST falls short and its that reason Detroit was trying to make him play more nickle. Diggs is a play maker no if ands or buts about that. Mentally he is the perfect Safety Physically he is borderline at best. If he is their starting FS next year i am fine with it but don't expect to see him case down anyone from behind or knock away to many passes at the last second. If Lano Hill can learn to read a play like Diggs then his 6 foot 1 frame and 4.47 speed would be a huge boost to the defense ... oh god i went there ...

If Blair can Beef up to 205-210 pounds then i think Strong safety is in good hands and if Hill who is extremely young at 24, turns 25 on 11/26/2020, can learn to diagnose plays his physical attributes will help. Sure i don't see either as Probowl players and Diggs could very well be a Probowl safety with more familiarity in the Hawks defense but man we need some of this "young" talent on the team to "IMPROVE". Maybe we should see about getting a better DB coach! Hell they sat on Cable WAY to long lets hope they can move on from Nick Sorensen soon like today would be good. He has been the DB coach for 3 years now and the DB's have not improved in 3 years lol. Hey how about DB coach Mike Reed from Clemson? Or DB Coach Charlton Warren, Georgia? two of the strongest pass defenses in NCAA football?

I would doubt that a team would bother trading for him given his age, cap hit and performance in 2019. There is always the option to potentially restructure his contract, but I think that they might be better off seeing what they have in Cody Barton. Even if Barton is worse than Wright was in 2019, I do think that the cap savings would be worth it.

Damn you really got me there, @blstoker . I didn't really give that consideration. I do think that the fact that the Seahawks ran that base 4-3 so much was an awful mistake. It didn't help the pass rush, it didn't help the pass coverage and it didn't lead to us having an effective rush defense. I have to assume it was due to the fact that the Seahawks have 3 good linebackers and that they didn't have faith in the DB depth.

My thoughts on K.J. Wright were mostly predicated on the assumption that these days a 5 DB/2LB/4DL formation is what we would be using most of the time.

I don't think the Seahawks will cut K.J. Wright for the reasons you mentioned - plus the fact that I haven't heard the idea floated once by any of the people who cover the Seahawks - it's mostly me playing arm-chair GM and holding the belief that we shouldn't have 3 linebackers on the field unless the offense is running a heavy formation.

As a safety if someone gets behind him, he's doing something wrong. Thankfully I didn't see much/if any of that from him. Also it really goes back to how much football is a team sport. With how awful the Seahawks pass rush was, it makes the secondary look worse than it is (not that I'm implying the talent in the secondary is great by any means). I do think that Diggs did have a good season and I see him as an above average caliber starting FS in the NFL.

as a 5 foot 8 4.57 40 guy getting behind him is not that hard for someone on the outside running 4.35-4.4 40. Remember he has to HOLD the middle and play as deep as the deepest player BUT if someone runs a go on the outside he has to cover 36.6 yards to = 20 yards the guy on the outside ran.

Some injury updates from PC at the combine:

• Running back Chris Carson, hip: “Chris is doing really well. There’s not a lot Chris can do (physically because of the hip), so he doesn’t have many things wrong. It’s an injury that just takes time and it’s serious because it’s a hip and it’s not serious in we know what’s going to happen and it’s not misplaced or that kind of stuff, we just need to wait it out … He’s doing the best he can and everything he can possibly do and we’re just hoping he doesn’t overdo it and trying to monitor that, but we’re counting on a full recovery and he should be ready to go.”

• Running back Rashaad Penny, torn ACL: “All reports talking to him he feels good. He’s ahead of schedule as we always tell you … He’s really optimistic about roaring back. He’s an incredibly fit guy, so we’ll see if that can all work out for us in quick fashion … It would be an extraordinary accomplishment if he was ready by the time we get to camp and all that. We’ll just see what happens. We’re not going to set any deadline on that, we’ll see how he develops.”

• Center Justin Britt, torn ACL: “He looks good. I’ve seen him a number of times coming through the building and all, and his attitude and I’m hearing the work ethic that he’s putting forth right now is exactly what we’d hope for right now. He’s doing great, so going to come roaring back from his surgery.”

• Guard/tackle Jamarco Jones, shoulder surgery: “Jamarco did a nice job for us. He really did … He’s got to get well. He’s got a little shoulder work that he had to get done that he’s got to come back strong from that, which he’s working on all the way, and he should, but it’s an exciting start for him.”

Seems like good news to me on Carson. My interpretation of Penny's timeline is that he's iffy to be able to play week 1 of the regular season. And to me, that probably makes it a little more likely there will be interest in bringing Lynch back in a reserve role at least until Penny is fully ready.

Agree... I would be surprised if he's ready to go by week 4...

I honestly hope they don't bring Lynch back... It was fun to see him return but he clearly is over the hill imo... He's going to be 34 1/2 years old when the season begins and that is very old for a RB... I'd prefer to have someone else in a reserve role...

I think he would come in to next season in better shape if it was a more deliberate plan as opposed to an in-season reaction to multiple injuries to the RB position in a fairly compact timeline. He certainly wouldn't be what he was a handful of years ago, but I think he has something left to give as a 3 or 4 carry per game backup guy and would be more effective than what we saw recently.

Was listening on the radio about how great it would be if the Seahawks could find a way to sign this guy and kick Ifedi to the curb. He's likely be the best RT the Seahawks have ever had. Be a move perhaps to unleash RW some. Not likely to happen, but fun to consider.

If we lose clowney, conklin would be a good consolation prize.

Reported that the Hawks are interested in trading for DE, Yannick Ngakoue...

According to Pauline, the Seahawks would give up their first-round pick (27th overall) and their top No. 2 pick (59th overall) to the Jaguars. In return, the Seahawks would get Ngakoue, who would be under the franchise tag, and the Jaguars’ second-round pick (42nd overall).

Hmmmm... This would be interesting... We would then have Ngakoue and (2) 2nd round picks (one received in F. Clark trade last year, too)... He's on an F-tag so we would need to negotiate a contract prior to trade, which i'm sure they would... Don't want another Clowney situation next season... I wonder if these discussions mean we're not going to land Clowney due to high demands for salary...Yannick is 2 years younger than JC and has only missed one game in his career so far... He's young enough to justify giving him a 5 year contract...

Clayton: A Seahawks trade for Yannick Ngakoue would make lots of sense

I like the idea and they have plenty of Draft picks left if they make the trade.
