White Sox Are Rumored To Be A Frontrunner To Sign Yasiel Puig

If so the Sox will tie their Guinness World record for most batters with a first name beginning with the letter "Y."

Is it possible to go one Cuban too far? If this is true - the Sox would be counting on their Cuban baseball culture to keep Puig focused and acting perfectly normal. ;)

Seems like there isn’t a ton of interest in him around the league. Offer him a 1 yr deal for good money. If it doesn’t work then move on. He might be a headcase but he’s a good player.

a wonderful picture in that link showing what we'd be getting.

We have Yastangibles. It's all good. Homey will be laying his jersey down in puddles for the ladies and walking old people across the street by opening day.

"You were a model citizen this season Yasiel...What happened?"

"Pitch framing."

I'm doubtful this happens BTW...but it's intriguing, I'll give them that.

Like I said - unapologetic stupidity.

Yasmani Grandal scouting report: Why the White Sox's new catcher will make a big difference on the South Side

Grandal's pitch presentation was worth more than 19 runs in 2019, which was second to only Austin Hedges of the San Diego Padres, according to Baseball Prospectus. Last season marked the sixth in a row that his framing had contributed at least 15 runs. Chicago's incumbent catcher James McCann, meanwhile, lost eight runs of value through framing.

The White Sox could see a 20-something-run swing in that regard, or about two wins' worth -- all because Grandal is better than McCann at sticking pitches.

His pitch framing alone is worth 2 wins vs McCann.

This might even be worse than when you mocked the importance of "downfield accuracy" for NFL QB's.

Pitch framing is the single most important aspect of the most important defensive position on the field. Which also directly impacts the success of your pitching staff. Being a great pitch framer saves more runs than being a great thrower or pitch blocker behind the plate. Yet, you mock the importance of it.

Honestly, you mock the importance of accuracy for NFL QB's and pitch framing for MLB catchers. How on Earth should anyone give you a shred of credibility?

Anyway, putting down my Grandal hammer for a moment.

I wish this was true. A Puig/Mazara platoon in RF would suddenly make me feel quite good about that position.

Puig actually hits RH pitchers better than lefties, so that pretty much defeats the purpose of platooning him with Mazara. Defensively, while he still has that cannon for an arm, his range has deteriorated. To be honest, I don't think he'd be any real upgrade defensively, as Mazara also has a really strong arm and his range is certainly no worse, maybe even a bit better. And I doubt that Puig would be content with being only a part time player. His attitude is already a bit questionable, altho he does seem to have toned this aspect down a bit. Hell, even fellow Cuban Abreu said he agrees with the Sox not pursuing Puig, stating that he wasn't a good fit for the team. That's good enough for me.

I think I pointed that out about Puig a while back. Good call. I forgot that.

Mazara is pretty subpar defensively and Puig is good, though. Far better athlete with a huge arm.

Puig has been a part-time player in LA.

I'm a big Puig fan and quite frankly? I love his passion. I wish he wouldn't start stupid shit with the opposition. But I'm all for guys who want to win in the worst way possible and play at 100 MPH.

In a way, I was complimenting him regarding the part about the part time play. I do believe he's put up good enough numbers to warrant signing with a team where starting in RF is his job to lose. I don't think he would stay happy for long being second banana for an entire season. As for his defense, yes the cannon still remains, but he has lost a good deal of range in his coverage. I'll blame it on his having gained at least 15-20 lbs since he first broke in with the Dodgers. He at times looks actually lumbersome out there on the field. But you may be right that despite this, he's still a better all around RF than Mazara. I really don't have much to go on with him. He was never on my radar until the Sox traded for him.

In any event, it's kinda moot now. It looks like Puig either signs with another MLB team soon or he packs up and relocates to Japan. At least that's the latest take.
