New Red Sox manager Roenicke speaks:

Roenicke says it’s ‘unfair’ to ask someone to replace Betts, but hopes for improvement of a number of players - Benintendi, Bradley - can help offset his loss. ‘You cannot replace Mookie Betts. He’s one of the best players I’ve ever seen.’

Uhhhhh, who wants to tell him that Benintendi and Bradley were already there?

:noidea:

I don't know how much improvement you can expect from JBJ, I think he is what he is at this point (a ~2 WAR outfielder that can carry your offense for several weeks and then look like a pitcher at the plate). Benintendi's still young and I think he'll bounce back from his 2019 season, but I'm starting to think the power won't quite materialize. He's starting to feel like Markakis 2.0.

Wonder if he's the new lead-off man. Have to think he makes the most sense right now.

I'd go with Benintendi or Verdugo.

really hope last year's strikeouts aren't a trend for him. he was a lot more aggressive at the plate than he was his first three seasons. His K% rose from 16% in 2018 to 22.8%. His SwStr% went from 7.6% in 2017-18 to 11.6% last year and he also saw his contact% dip from 83.5% to 77.3%. His O-Contact% went from 76.5% in 2018 to 68.9%.

The top 5 of the lineup could still be one of the best in the league, but there's some uncertainty afterwards. Vazquez will likely regress and Chavis has plate discipline issues.

The Blue Jays are going to be a team that I think will surprise a few people this year. Won't be a playoff team but I think they'll get around 80-85 wins.

it's possible though I think they'd finish closer to 80 than 85. they'll probably need a few players to exceed their projections (i.e. Vlad breakout, Nate Pearson having a strong debut). FWIW, their "expected" W-L last year was 71-91, 4 wins above their actual record. Still not good, but they did finish only a few games below .500 in the second half (33-38 with a -18 run differential; 34-57 with a -84 run differential in the 1st half). They will be getting full seasons from Biggio and Bichette as well. They should be fun to watch.

In the words of Yogi Berra, it's like deja vu all over again.

Luis Severino felt discomfort last night and still this morning in his right forearm. Being shut down until he can see a doctor tomorrow and determine problem. MRIs in December and February were clean. But continuing soreness, so we wait to see what comes of it.
