What Shanahan's late Super Bowl play-calling should tell us

When the 49ers took over again with 6:13 remaining, Kansas City had cut the lead to 20-17. The 49ers’ first offensive play was from their own 20-yard line.

Mostert gained 5 yards on first down, setting up a second-and-5. It was wide open for Shanahan to run or pass. The Chiefs had eight defenders in the box. At this stage of the game, Garoppolo had completed 18 of his 22 pass attempts.

Garoppolo faked an inside handoff to Mostert, who if he had been handed the ball would have run into the teeth of the Kansas City defense to the left. Kittle, lined up in the right slot, was wide open for what would have been at least a 10-yard gain in the middle of the field.

Shanahan has no regrets on abandoning run down stretch

When asked if he wished they had run the ball more on that possession, Shanahan stood by his decision.

"No not at all," he said. "The last thing you're thinking about when you're up three points and there is that much time left, the clock is not an issue at that time, especially with the timeouts. The issue was moving the chains. If you move the chains, then you will wind the clock."

Jimmy G. choked away the game.
That really makes Shanahan look bad. He knows darn well he should have run there but won't admit it. He knows, as do you, that the only way the clock could stop is with an incomplete pass and he brought that chance into the equation with the poor play call. His ego got the best of him.

How are they the best team then?
Won more games than any team while playing in the toughest division and the toughest conference. KC was the better team on Super Bowl Sunday. They played 60 minutes instead of 54 like the 49ers did.

6 or almost 6 minutes is too early just to run the ball, you need first downs. The defense is looking to stop the run with 8 in the box. second and 5 is the ideal time to try a pass to get that first down. Jimmy gets that first down and I bet you declare Shanahan brilliant and Jimmy MVP. Course Jimmy choked so Shanahan an idiot for counting on him from distraught 49er fans.

As I've said many times, all JG had to do was not overthrow Sanders on one single play and the following are declared by most here and the media:

1. JG is a SB MVP and a top 10 QB
2. Shanahan is the new young genius coach (his play call got Sanders wide open after all)
3. Andy Reid is still a choker
4. Mahomes is soft
5. KC has little chance to get back to the SB

One play.

Sounds like the 49ers weren’t the best team

If Ben doesn't throw a ball to santonio. Then Kurt Warner is more highly regarded. Bens a nobody.

Kicker misses a kick, does Brady become goat? I love revisionist history.

The big what if game?

1....with his stats, he might still win MVP if he connects there, but if that DEF keeps KC stuck on 10...idk
2....no question that would've been the media's take
3....yep
4....doubtful
5....idk about that, keep the DEF intact and get a big RB, they will have a shot while Mahomes is on his rookie deal.

Maybe if the dB would of turned around it's different too.

maybe if Kevin Dyson got 2 more yards..... oh the fun we could have.

History shows the SB loser often doesn't even make the playoffs the next year let alone go to the SB again

Again, for the umpteenth time, I'm not saying KC didn't win that game as the better team. They did, they were. But the narratives we construct can be a little overwrought. Is Reid really a choker if JG makes that one throw? Is JG really so terrible because he missed it?

You keep missing my point. If a kicker misses a kick, does that make Brady less awesome? If Ben doesn't connect with Santonio, is Warner truly better? I'm just musing on how narratives are constructed often on tiny things like that.

I'm not the best with hypothetical situations, but I didn't think you meant KC returning was a next year thing.

Reid...IDK about choker...I think KC was a 1.5 or 2 pt favorite iirc, but definitely the same ole Andy Reid...can't win the big one would've continued.

JG...naturally he's looked at in a different light if the pass is completed, but for me, the way Shanahan called these playoff games including the SB, that told me enough about JG....at least how Shanny perceives him. Clearly he did not take on the same type of game plan that he did with Matt Ryan.

To be honest...given JG's real game experience...can't really blame Shanahan but when your QB is making that kind of coin, you expect them to be the catalyst.

Like your doing here, its all how you twist things.

Small things are what seperates the elite from the average, heck the NFL guys from the XFL guys. The guys who get drafted to the UDFA

I'm referring to how OTHER players small things can affect a DIFFERENT player's legacy. Or a coach's.

Yes. I get that. Those small things they do, and those small results, are what separates them.
