With the reports at SoxFest - it appears that Grandal has spread his control of Sox pitchers and relievers like a fast moving virus. The Sox have not only invested in a top player, but he is also an injection into the blood stream of the pitching staff. It will be fascinating to see if he blends well with Coop.

It appears to me that Yez Grandal brings a large intangible plus in showing the pitchers how this here game -here works.

i think we should wait for reality to happen before we judge these things. i know that giolito has professed he's extremely happy with mccann as his catcher.

LOL - I am a forward thinker. You are right, of course.

It is noticeable though when multiple players are talking about it at SoxFest. I think a case could me made that it is the Buzz so far. It could make McCann jealous - and Coop territorial and we Sox fans wouldn't know what went on until two seasons later when the announcers begin to make casual reference to how bad it was for the club back then.

I thought it was cool that Abreu - Robert - Moncada and Eloy were running like a rat pack through SoxFest. Evidence about togetherness among the players - is always a good sign in my book. Abreu is doing his part in raising the young players.

I think it is a sure bet that McCann stays Giolitto's catcher. What is interesting there is that the only area of the plate where McCann pitch frames as well as Grandal is high - and the high fastball is Giolittlo's out pitch.

Except he's done these things throughout his career already and you can take it to the bank. He's an elite catcher offensively/defensively and it's not really disputable at this point.

Yeah, I usually back my buddies too. That's why players don't make these decisions. I would also probably like a catcher who was behind the plate during my breakout season.

McCann has had one good half of a season of baseball in his career with an insanely inflated BABIP aiding him and then he went right back to the 2nd catcher value (WAR hovering around 0) that he has flashed throughout his career.

In the 1st half McCann had an insane .408 BABIP aiding him to a .316/.371/.502 slash-line

Then, when the inevitable regression hit with a .299 BABIP? In the 2nd half McCann slashed .226/.281/.413

Very in-line with his career .247/.297/.683

That coupled with is poor pitch framing screams "2nd catcher". He's 30 now. This is a 6 season sample size. This is who James McCann is.

Another thing to consider is it's almost a sure thing that if Giolito is healthy leaving camp, he gets the nod to start. I'd be mighty surprised to see Grandal on the bench on opening day after we signed him to the largest contract in Sox history. Makes no sense whatsoever. Or if you move him over to 1b, then either Encarnacion or Abreu sits. That's not gonna happen either. So at least on day one, I see Lucas and Yasmani manning the battery. How they work it out down the road can be a different story, but not for opening day.

and in the 2nd half yasmani slashed .229/.388/.398.
look, you can believe any fucking thing you want. you're only fooling yourself.
this very point is something else i've dealt with in one of these posts. yasmani hits pretty well in one half and like shit the next half and has his whole career. 2018 .226/ 2017 .217/ 2016 .212 et cetera. now let's hear you talk about yas's "inevitable regressions".

I will declare him the Grandalist of them all.

I always look for team leadership. Any part of Grandal's approach to baseball that rubs off on Eloy -Madrigal - Robert -or the pitching staff is a boost to the team. Abreu can't do it all by strong silent example. Two of my favorite Sox historical periods - were when Pudge was a team leader and later when AJ showed everyone how to compete and be ready at any moment of the game. We need a field general. Having a catcher - smart enough about the game to put the pitching strategies in sync with the fielding strategies by making sure everyone understands what they are doing with each batter. That kind of guy can get you a better defense - he sits and looks at the infield staring back at him - he can keep them plugged into the situations. Good catchers catch and call pitches - great catchers give you edge in every moment of play.

So am I to take it that you predict Grandal will be riding pine on opening day? If so, let's make a bet out of it. But my guess is you're just being coy in order to play both sides of the coin.

first we're assuming the opening starter will be giolito (i want to just refer to him as gio but now i can't because of that dumb gio pickup). if he is then i will be mighty surprised if mccann isn't catching. where yasmani might be is anyone's guess (1st, dh or pine). as for betting .... i don't bet ... on anything ... ever. as with everything here, time will tell.

Figured you'd back out, id. If Grandal starts on opening day then you'd simply say that you never predicted he wouldn't. But if he didn't start, you'd say "I told you so". That's your style. Too bad, I had a fascinating bet to offer.

as usual .. full of shit. you see, YOU are the clown who thinks he has to predict everything (which is why you're wrong so often). if you haven't noticed, i don't play that stupid game.

I don't care what voodoo Grandal performs if they make the playoffs. They have to make it to .500 first.

Which is a hell of a lot better than McCann's line.

Also, lol batting average.

stupid thing to say considering mccann has a higher lifetime avg.
let's ignore the fact you missed entirely my point that yasmani is a hitter for a half season and does, more often, what mccann is accused of.

look, i admit yasmani has a bigger bat than mccann in total because he has more hr power (something the sox aren't short of anyway). however, he's a much worse fielding catcher. in 8 years yasmani has accumulated a life time 2.3 dwar. in only 6 year mccann has accumulated a 4.7. don't know about you, but i'd rather have the better fielder than the little bit extra bat for a team that doesn't need it.

This thread is the kind of sh*t that happens when you pay 73 million to a guy that hits .241.

lol batting average indeed.
