It’s comical at this point. There’s only 3 explanations to explain why castellanos and a reliever who would make the roster weren’t signed. All 3 reasons suck. They are :

1) The owners are a bunch of tightwads

2) management believes way too much in our guys.

-With the way condor hit last year, we needed to bring in someone who could easily step in if he shits the bed at the plate.

- Jeffrey springs has no business being on this roster.

3) the owners don’t give a shit. They just pretend that they do.

It could be anyone of the 3 or a combination of them, but I’m disappointed that they decided to make our starting pitching better, but they’re pretty much leaving our lineup and bullpen alone. Both of those areas needed a little help as well.
#3 is my chose. The owners don't really give a shit

Well Jeffrey Springs is no longer on the team. We traded him to the Redsox for Sam Travis.
Travis could be a potential RH to platoon with Guzman at 1B. I’d rather Solak or Heinemann do the platooning though.
But rest assured Springs is no longer on our roster.
Condor has been working out this offseason with Nelly Cruz and He looks big and strong. He might tear the cover off the ball this year.

Our Bullpen is pretty decent
Leclerc
Chavez
Montero
Joely Rodriguez
Brett Martin
N Goody
Farrell
And guys like Huang, Edinson Volquez, Nicasio, Flynn, Dillard, Gibaut
And don’t forget big boy Demarcus Evans. Dudes a beast.
Relief pitchers are kind of hot or cold and not all that consistent.
Having a lot of depth with potential should lead to having a strong 7 guys in the bullpen. 1 Long Reliever and 5 starters to make up the 13 pitchers.
A lot of the guys who don’t make the 26 man can go down to AAA and if someone at the major league level struggles just call the guy riding a hot hand up to the show.

you make some decent points.

however..... in order to hit the cover off the ball. You must make contact. Condor looked in over his head last year and the last few weeks he was here, the dude was an automatic strikeout at a position where teams usually put their best or second best hitter.

I like montero quite a bit. Some of the other guys in the bullpen are worth a shot. I wish we wouldn’t just give leclerc closer after all of his struggles last year.

I guess that’s the big question this year. Last year it could be explained away I guess “ rebuilding year...... who cares how bad they do run them out there”.

This year....... ranger fans should be asking themselves. Will we see a meritocracy? Will the best players indeed play?

or will the front office play grab ass, pick favorites, and send Emily Jones to try to explain before first pitch why odor is the second coming of Jackie Robinson and just wait for him to turn it around. It’s coming.

Well just to be positive here’s a link to Mo Vaughn, HOF’er Tony Perez and Tino Martinez. Similar starts to their career that Guzman has had so far. This could be the year. Lol

The last 2 weeks he hit 269 and last month 305.

I would have much rather Wash landed there.
Would like for them to sign Brad Ausmus. As I have always said he makes a great statue in the dugout. Completely worthless.

i didn’t fully clarify.

I meant the last 2 weeks before we finally sent him down.

anyway, condor gives me similar vibes to odor.

I’ve said for years that odor won’t turn it around and I’ve been right, but hopefully I’m wrong about Guzman.

looks like we’ll see

Long term, it would have been better to continue the rebuilding process one more year. Wanting to appear to be in competing mode without spending the money to actually do so, will give us a somewhat better team in the short term, but will keep us from advancing, talent-wise, as quickly in a couple of years.

What an offseason this has been.

Overall, I would give a grade of "F". Broken down it is a "D+" for short term and "F" for long term. The syllabus says the long term grade counts 80% of the final grade.

Now, watch JD give Minor a five year extension so that Minor is never able to be traded.

Other than catcher, the IF is no better than last year. The OF is no better either. The rotation has been upgraded. Overall not much was done to put us back on track. We had several opportunities to improve and elected not to. It seems a mystery to me that money was not spent to compliment the new stadium. I'm probably wrong but it seems the team owners have no interest in the teams future.

We definitely need a RHB and last heard was JD was more in trade acquisition right or wrong. Conversely we have Choo at DH this year and guys like Calhoun and Solak who are DH candidates.

Perhaps it was a low ball attempt at Castellanos but 4 years with opt out is not ideal. Offseason is still not over. I will suspend judgement for now

Lol. You could just leave off the words "for now."

4 years is exactly what we all thought he would get the other day and I don't remember you having any problem with that then. The opt out is no big deal.

Yes, the offseason is not over. There is still time for a foolish desperation trade to take place.

I give it a C-

our pitching was god awful last year. I can’t imagine the pitching being in the “ bad” category again this year.

I was extremely disappointed that no effort was made to upgrade our infield. Infield is the weakness of our team and it still is. You can say catcher is part of the infield, but I always view the pitcher / catcher as a pair.

the infield to me is 3rd base, short stop, second, and first base.

We have a stop gap at 3rd

we have a cozy team leader at SS. Short stop remains the infield position I’m least worried about.

we have a “ troublemaker” at 2nd base. Contract has been already given to him and front office is scared to punish or reprimand him in any meaningful way. The last few year or so he has just clogged up the position and prevented better players from more opportunities.

We have an “ underperformer” at first base. He hasn’t been paid yet, thankfully. His bat still leaves a ton to be desired. I know everyone loves it when he does the splits, but he doesn’t do much else and that’s why he’s had trouble staying up with the big league team.

I’m assuming that we didn’t offer Castellanos a chance to play everyday and the reds did.

Im just very disappointed that the front office made zero effort to move any of these underperforming guys in the infield.

Your grading system must be completely focused on 2020 and 2021 then. Even on the short term I can't agree with you though. There were too many short term assignments where JD failed to turn in anything at all. Those zeros are hard on the grade average.

This is my fear. As long an Arenado trade is hanging in the air JD may be desperate for a “win” and trade off the farm and still pay all his contract. I would hate to see their main pitching prospects go and see Nolan go in two years. JD has been a fan of one year contracts so what was so wrong with the Castellanos contract to not pursue.
