Report: Lions hiring Cory Undlin as defensive coordinator

Undlin has been coaching in the NFL since 2004, when he started as a defensive assistant with the New England Patriots. In that same year, Lions head coach Matt Patricia also got his break in the NFL as the Patriots’ offensive assistant.

Since then, Undlin has jumped around, serving several roles with the Browns over five years, three years with the Jaguars, three years with the Broncos, and finally four years as the Eagles’ defensive backs coach.

At least it is someone with his own style and schemes. He should at least bring something more to the table then PP did.

You meant Undlin will be masquerading MP's style and scheme, right ?

I am hoping he transforms it into something more dynamic then rushing 3 guys and dropping 8 back (4 of which couldnt cover me nevermind an NFL WR). Even the zones were not disguised.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Pattycakes never read the 48 laws of power. It's better to hire enemies than friends.

I thought nepotism was when you hire family.

1. Patricia already said that he's retaining the defensive play calling duties. So I wouldn't hold my breath expecting much schematic change.

2. The guy has been Jim Schwartz's DB coach for the last 5 years. Do you recall Schwartz ever bringing extra rushers? (answer is 'no'). He was running a 4-3, so they rushed 4 rather than 3, but never more than that.

The interesting things is, our coverages under Patricia have been heavy man; more man than any other team in the league. And Schwartz, as we know, was nearly 100% zone. We'll see if Patricia runs more zone coverages with this guy.

Well he better change something because this is his last shot. I cant see him being retained if they have another season like last year.

We're the best non-pass rushing team in the league.

That counts for something in the awards sphere of the NFL.

Actually Undlin has a speed philosophy when it comes to defense and Patricia is a power guy. Maybe this combo might actually work. PP did nothing but call plays. He added nothing scheme wise.

and Undlin will fall in place to what PP wants/demands.

Don't fool yourself into thinking there'll be drastic changes in scheme. I will state that in the last 4 games where PP seemed to be more involved in play calling I did notice a lot more 5, 6, 7, man fronts. That personnel changed pre/post snap but at the minimum there was more variety in looks than previous 12 games.

Your defensive backs will never turn their heads around and they will never find the football.
