9ers pass D was elite though this season. It slipped at the end of the year because injuries started to pile up and take a toll but it's healthier and will be rested for the SB and it's closer to where it was at the beginning of the season than the end.
The game to look at will be the Chiefs vs Patriots and the Chiefs offense vs Pats defense to get a feel for the upcoming game. The Pats defense was pretty comparable in terms of effectiveness with the 9ers with the Pats having a better secondary but the 9ers having the better front.
In that game Mahomes was just solid and I have a feeling he'll be around that in the Super Bowl. I feel people are falling a bit into recency bias with Mahomes because of what he's done in the playoffs so far but the Texans had a terrible pass defense this year and the Titans were better but not by a lot and they had the added benefit of playing in their 4th straight road game.
People are expecting the 9ers to just rush 4 but I think they are going to send 5 more than what people think. I'd send guys from different spots just so it's in the offensive line and Mahomes head that you're not quite sure how many are coming and from where.
Its really hard to say. We haven't really seen the Niners get punched in the mouth yet. There are a lot of teams that make it to the Super Bowl without really facing adversity and then something like 28-3 happens or 18-1 happens. Then again, some of the best teams ever never really get tested and win the Super Bowl in a blowout.Should be a very good game. Not every year we get two teams this good in the SB.

I was looking at the two playoff games in particular because they beat the Vikings and Packers pretty easily while the Chiefs were given early scares by Texans and Titans. If anything the 9ers might have been the most battle tested team going into the playoffs.
Their last 8 games were brutal with their opp winning percentage being .648. They had Seattle twice, Green Bay, and had back to back road games against the Ravens and Saints.
Not to mention their last 5 games were all decided in the final seconds so they were playing tight playoff like games for weeks leading into the playoffs.

Mahomes went 5-0 and Jimmy G went 2-1.How did Mahomes & Jimmy each fare against top-10 passing defenses?

We're very flattered by your misleading small sample size without including footnotes for injury.
Now let's see what it looks like for when adding in last year:

I think it is going to come down to the 49ers pass defense vs Mahomes. They are not going to be able to shut down Mahomes but they have to make stops. I think the 49ers offense will move the ball against the Chiefs defense but will have a tough time trying to win in a shootout against Mahomes.
I agree with this take.
KC...their DEF has ramped up and improved as the season went along and they got comfortable with the scheme but they are not a stout group against the run. They did a great job against Henry, but the best job was getting ahead a couple of possessions and forcing the game to Tannehill.
SF run game is a little different, there are multiple ball carriers, not all are RBs, there is always misdirection that must be respected so they keep you off balance.
Ultimately I think like you that it does come down to the SF DL/secondary vs the KC passing game. If the SF edge players have a great game, the 49ers will win...if they don't SF can still win, but they will need to be in the high 20s to low 30s.

No doubt how the secondary covers the receivers will be important, but it's going to be all about the Niners pass rush and containment. If Mahomes gets the time he's been getting the past two games or if he breaks and runs for yardage, then all the secondary coverage the Niners are able to muster won't matter one bit.
