...So was reading a bit about Hahn and the Sox, and it turns out the Sox (at least according to Hahn) had contact with both Keuchel and Cishek from day 1 of offseason. So does that mean that Gio was the fallback when Wheeler fell through and the Sox had planned on both Wheeler and Keuchel?

Tending to think this Mazara thing is literally a stopgap and we may make a big run at Betts if our pitching is legit during next offseason. He is the over the hump target.

If we're somehow legit by midseason and Mazara is a flop AND the Bosox are flailing (that's a lot of ifs)...possibly a midseason move for him with a contract in hand.

Either way, I have a sense if this thing doesn't crash and burn, Betts the guy we're considering for the big splash move going forward. Mazara is just a hold the place deal where we can get more than horrendously poor production in the meantime. And that would make more sense why Castellanos isn't even on our radar (not that I'm a big fan of him anyway.)

Addendum for LSD: We're gonna stink and the world is going to end. You mad.

Hahaha, good stuff Jiddy and I'm still laughing at your last line. I feel you brought up an interesting take and who knows, there may be some fire there amongst the smoke. One thing's for certain tho, Betts is going to cost an arm and a leg, with the liver thrown in for good measure in order to ink him to a long term contact. As for a midseason trade option, I would only want him if we didn't have to give up any of our top prospects. No sense giving up choice draft capital for a 2 month rental, even if we're in the thick of the race.

I can't imagine that he'll cost more than Machado...but what do I know...These assholes are getting paid over the top money every other second.

As for the midseason trade, you're probably 99.9% right. But you never know with Jerry...If we came flying out of the gates and were solidly in first place, then I could see us making some off the wall move to try to get over the hump if it included getting a player we were eyeing anyway.

It could definitely be that Gio was a fallback. I think it was a good value signing of a proven veteran that can certainly be solid on the back end of a rotation. Not near the upside of Wheeler, though. We offered Wheeler the most money... he preferred somewhere else. Oh well, moving on.

Per Mazara, he's a former top prospect who showed a ton of raw power in bursts but also would fall into slumps darker than a black hole. Texas would teach just an absurd launch angle to their left-handed power bats due to the short porch in right field. Him, Gallo and others just K'd incessantly with the obnoxiously long/upward bat-head path. I think that the organization saw a chance to get a really talented player (still young) at a bargain and possibly make some adjustments to help him break out. If not? Then, he's just a stop-gap until you get to a guy like Betts or whomever. Nothing hurt.

Your take on Mazara is spot on. Fix him in a year or reload for the position.

Betts will definitely cost more than Machado. His career numbers are head/shoulders better than Machado at the plate. He's won 4 gold gloves in a row. He typically steals 25-30 bases per season. He won the MVP in 2018. Finished 2nd, 6th, 1st and 8th in MVP voting over the past four seasons.

Mookie is the closest thing to Mike Trout in baseball.

No sh*t...Well...That sucks...Probably wrong then if Betts is like 400 million territory.

Not sure if he'll be in 400 territory, but if he has another Betts-like year and is healthy going into the offseason, I definitely see a 300+ contract waiting for him. Would Jerry be willing to fork over that kind of moola? History would tell us not a chance in h-e-double hockey sticks. But who knows, if Jerry was to learn that he only has a couple of years left to live, maybe he'd then spring for it.

I'd be willing to bet Jerry would put up 350 if he thought the player would put us over the top.

FFS, the Marlins paid a player 325....

Of course, we'd have to be real contender and have a reasonable payroll outlook otherwise...Hmmm...Sounds about right. No pressure 2020 White Sox.

I doubt we sign a big money pitcher outside of a B/C level pitcher similar to Keuchel. We're hoping what we have is enough. I'd be willing to bet on a guy like Betts far before a big money pitcher. Jerry gonna Jerry.

On that we agree 100%

It's a scary thought because if our pitching is still sh*t on a stick in 2020, we will trade some "coveted" prospects everyone is gawking about for pitching to get cheaper years of control if our bats are legit.

Maybe so, but there's no way on this planet that Jerry would have forked out more than $245m for Strasburg or more than $324m for Cole, and that's assuming either of them would have signed with us even at a higher amount. Lest we forget, Zack Wheeler signed with the Phils despite Hahn offering $7m more. I trust you're in agreement that those other salaries would have hamstrung us for years. Somehow the thought of paying them 35m/36m, respectively, in their age 39 seasons wouldn't make for a bunch of happy Sox fans.

I don't think Jerry would even pay that for a 25 year old....much less 30+.

Maybe the Mets left Tom Seaver off the list again. *crosses fingers*

Colin McHugh is still out there and might be a good addition to the Sox's relievers - as he can pitch in long or short relief - adds a winning veteran presence.

Local boy too, out of Naperville. Wonder if he grew up a Sox or Cubs fan. I like this, he could be that crossover long reliever/spot starter that our roster at the moment appears to be lacking. I thought initially Covey could fill that role, but since he's no longer on the club that point is moot. Not sure however if McHugh prefers to land with a club where he's guaranteed a shot at starting, which up until a couple years ago, that's all he ever did. But if he's ok with a hybrid role, yeah I'm all in on Hahn taking a flier on him.
