Really?

"I refuse to move positions so my newly acquired, far better defensive and offensive teammate can play short stop, knowing him being at short would make our infield defense better, and thus be better as a team."

LOL @ that notion.

Chipper was never really that much of a leader until the later stages of his career, but he volunteered to play left field when we had a chance to get Vinny Castilla(though in hindsight, I wish he would have refused. He ruined his legs in left field and Castilla was ultimately a bust)
I didn't see it but apparently, yeah. I can't think of a more ESPN-thing then for them to trip over themselves fawning over Jeter, Brady and Lebron. Maybe throw Tebow in for a bingo.

Neither did Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron or Willie Mays or anyone in the Hall not named Mariano Rivera(and it's bullshit that a relief pitcher is the only unanimous induction).

All of that is bullshit.

There’s almost always some asshole that deliberately bucks the trend- probably just to see his name mentioned. I say “almost”, because Mariano Rivero was the first and only one to achieve that feat.

Imagine you’re one of these writers, and some colleague says he’s not going to vote for Cal Ripken Jr., Ken Griffey Jr., or Greg Maddux?

That guy doesn't deserve his HoF vote anymore. Fuck that shit. Ripken, Griffey, Maddux, Jeter, they all should've been unanimous. How the fuck are they not?!

Because those handful of guys are assholes. In some cases, these writers have said afterwards that they did think the people they voted against were deserving of HoF, but voted against them because they knew their colleagues would vote them in. So enough of them are talking to each other that they’re influencing votes. Other times, some have said no one deserves entry on the first ballot and take it upon themselves to deliberately block that unanimous vote. Not, you know, actually deciding based upon stats or anything.

My guess is, Rivera was unanimous, only because some writers probably screwed up and didn’t read each other’s emails (by accident).

FS1 did the same exact thing on "Speak for yourself"

Usually players do not get 100% because there are other worthy candidates that some writers use their ballots to include - knowing that a player is already guaranteed 75%...

But this year was very weak, so it was probably some red-headed idiot from Boston...

nah. The next few years will be, though.

2021 Potential Hall of Fame Ballot | Baseball-Reference.com

the only newcomers I'd potentially vote for in 2021 are Hudson and Buehrle.

2022 Potential Hall of Fame Ballot | Baseball-Reference.com

A-Rod's one of the greatest players of all-time, but he's probably going to get the Bonds/Clemens treatment if not worse. Ortiz might make it in on the first attempt. Teixeira was very good but I don't think his peak was long/strong enough.

2023 Potential Hall of Fame Ballot | Baseball-Reference.com

Beltran's first year. His numbers are HOF worthy but the scandal might doom his HOF chances. After him, the highest WAR among first timers is John Lackey.

2024 Potential Hall of Fame Ballot | Baseball-Reference.com

Beltre should make it in his first year pretty easily. I think Utley and Mauer are HOFers, but they could be waiting a while. Wright looked like a HOFer but his career was a little too short.

Derek Jeter didn't deserve a unanimous vote into the MLB Hall of Fame? Are you fucking serious right now? Were you just born or something?
Have you seen how many players were unanimously voted in?

How would you rank Jeter all-time?

Stupid argument.

Have you seen how many Hall of Famers were on every ballot until the late 80s? There were 43 eventual HOFers on the very first HOF ballot. There was a 30-year (minimum) backlog to clear. Holding the current classes to that standard is idiocy. Hell, it wasn't until the 13th vote that someone who got in the top 20 total votes on a ballot didn't make the Hall.

The Hall doesn't have a "first-ballot" wing or a unanimous wing. At this point, it's just a manufactured distinction to get people to pay attention to specific sportswriters.

This I agree with. And, I suspect I know which idiot Boston writer it is, too... (see above)...

I just don't think it matters if they get 80% or 100%.... And, as a Boston fan, I have hated seeing Jeter overrated for his entire career... He'd definitely crack my top ten, but there are some fans that think he's the greatest all time....

Why does Ortiz get a free pass on juicing? He failed the exact same test as Bonds. Is because he’s lovable and looks like Florida from Good Times?

Why?? He was caught for juicing...why would they let him in (especially on the 1st ballot) and not these other guys lol.

Seriously.

If he gets in, Palmeiro belongs. Raffy was a better hitter and could actually play the field.

Beats me. Not saying he should be given a free pass (I think Ortiz's HOF case is pretty borderline tbh), but I also don't care about PEDs. Bonds/Clemens not being in is a travesty and I expect A-Rod to get the same bullshit treatment. I'd put McGwire and Raffy in, though I think Sosa's borderline. But given the lack of coverage around Ortiz and the postseason narrative, I expect him to get in the HOF pretty easily.

Yes, I'm serious. If Jeter played for the Indians or Twins, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. Yankees fans are funny when they don't get their way.
