We were in the base 4-3 way too much. I assume that is because of lack of personnel or just a defensive philosophy but either way it needs to change.

I would absolutely love to see us draft a S/LB that falls in the draft because he is a "tweener". Would be a great option to get out of the 4-3 and into a nickel.

As far as the DL is concerned, I think we have damn near everyone needing a new contract. Hopefully that situation resolves itself without causing havoc because we obviously need more pass rush.

Yes i 100% agree, they need someone like Kam and it will help not only the speed in the box on running plays but The defense as a whole. The way they or at least how it's been since Pete got here is having that Strong safety be the 8th defender in the box or they remove a LB drop the big SS into the box and they run a nickle, this messes up the passing lanes and makes any throw underneath or in the middle MUCH harder to complete. Those are the Quick passes allowing QB's to get out of trouble before it arises. I stumbled across a kid that might be there in the mid to late rounds if not a UDFA. I posted a link to a video of him earlier in this thread, about the middle of page one.

how about this guy for a sleeper pick at Strong Safety? 6 foot 2, 220+ running a 4.45 40.

Pretty good article on FA class:
The 50 best available NFL free agents in 2020 | NFL News, Rankings and Statistics | PFF

They have Reid at 49, call him a rotational guy that "may see him slip through the cracks of free agency until the later waves when the big names have been cleaned up." If PFF is right, sounds like a one year prove it deal isnt out of the question.

Other guys on the list that are potential signings:

pass rush options:
Robert Quinn 11.5 sacks in 2019, 29 years old
Kyle Van Noy 6.5 sacks, 28 years old
Yannick Ngakoue 8 sacks, 25 years old

Any of these guys would likely do pretty well opposite clowney

I think that's because we were SO terrible against the run. Seattle's been atrocious against the run for the last couple years allowing a bottom 5 yards per carry both... I think the thought is keep 3 linebackers in to help, but either way our DTs and DEs just can't keep up. Clowney is great, but the rest of the DLINE sucks ass at the moment and Reed just wasted MILLIONS with his performance this year.

Team needs to draft/spend money on the DL ASAP. Sadly Clowny is going to command 16M+, because when he was on the field he was dominant and the only reason Seattle's D did fuck all. Wagner is IMO not carrying this defense anymore... amazing player and IMO HOF worthy, but too many hits. Age is catching up with him. Love #54 though.

Wagner led the league in tackles, and added 3 sacks, a pick, a ff, and a fr and is only 29. He'll be fine for at least 2 more seasons

Yah I know.. I just don't think he can keep it together much anymore. There was times in coverage and assessment/speed on tackles where it's clear he has lost a step. Still a stud player, I love B Wags, but not the same guy from a couple years back. Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting him to be, but the D needs support/work to supplement him.

ESPN had Reed at No. 10.

Not sure he's the 10th best FA but he's definitely not the 49th best FA either.

We really need to open up the check book for Clowney and then try to find a diamond in the rough somewhere.

If we can sign clowney, tag and trade reid? be a shame to let him walk and get nothing in return. you might get a 3rd or a 2nd if we are lucky in a trade.

I think Bobby is fine. His issue was always fighting off blocks. The front 4 would not hold up on running plays, they would not set the edge more often than not and they let to many Olineman get to the second level. This in turn slows everyone down because of men blocking them or fighting through traffic. Do i think the defense is slow? yes on the back end they are but Bobby still has it it's just he has to fight through a lot of trash and blocks that he didn't have to before.

That cap space starting to look skimpy.

Though the cap space would seem large, there are a lot of holes that need to be filled - either by bringing back free agents, signing free agents or drafting them. That money isn't going to stretch that far.

By my count the positions that are up for grabs or just need a starter quality player to fill them:

3rd WR
LG
RT
2 DE
2 DT

As well as depth at:

QB
WR
TE
OL
DL
LB
CB

That was kind've what I was trying to show everyone. Reading the Kareem Hunt thread, and contemplated putting this there, it becomes evident that spending 5 million on a position that seems to be as close to settled as any on the roster would be a little wasteful with the current needs the team has (especially if 15% is going to Clowney).

completely forgot about naz jones, he showed some potential it would be nice if he made something out of himself this coming year.

as far as cap goes, I still feel we can sign clowney and go after one other FA. we can also cut a few guys to make more room:
justin britt 8.5m
kj wright 7.5m
ed dickson 3m - not sure how he is even on the team still he has been nothing but injured.
