Ohh what the hell, why not.

Please do it alphabetically.

Thanks

alphabetically doesn't work, it's got to be chronologically.

Dr. Henry Williams came to UMn and made them into a blue blood. Guy could be the King of Coaching Trees although I haven't compared him to others. I prefer to think it's just what Minnesota does, or used to do at least.

1900-1919, UMn's winning percentage was the best win % out of current FBS teams.

His players went out and coached like motha fuckers

Gil Dobie, after 2 years at some lesser college where he went undefeated, went to University of Washington and NEVER LOST A SINGLE GAME. He STILL owns the longest undefeated streak in NCAA cfb history. From Wash he went to Navy and lost only 3 games in 3 years, then went to Cornell and after a 6-2 record his first season, went undefeated for 3 straight seasons. Not hard to believe he ended up in the college football Hall of Fame.

Clark Shaughnessy, built Tulane into a blue blood. His former teammate and asst coach, took over for him after he left, they would later SHARE the 1940 Natl Title, he after taking Stanford to an undefeated season, his former teammate, Bernie Bierman, after continuing the awesomeness at Tulane(which included 2 Natl Titles), at Minnesota, where he landed after Tulane. And 1940 was his 4th of 5 Natl Titles in 8 years before a World War ended his dynasty. Shaughnessy's coaching techniques worked so well at Stanford, Chicago employed him to help them and they won the NFL Title by pummeling their opponent 73-0.

73-0.

He got a job coaching the Rams, took them to the playoffs, got let go because of a conflict with the owner, yet his influence on the game of football was so significant, despite only coaching 2 years in the NFL, he was nominated for the NFL Hall of Fame three times, and he was inducted into the CFB Hall of Fame.

Ossie Solem played for Henry Williams as well, and dominated Pro football for almost a decade before the NFL officially started in 1920, but he also went on to get inducted into "A" college football Hall of Fame. Not "The" cfb HOF, but I think it was the Helms Athletic Foundation cfb Hall of Fame. So that is THREE Hall of Famers, SO FAR, all coached by the same guy.

Fred Schacht, another Henry Williams player coached 2 years at Kentucky, and owned the best UK football season for the first 58 years of UK football, going 9-1, outscoring it's opponents 276-15. It took Bear Bryant and a schedule with 2 more games on it to best him.

From 1915-1941, minus 1 season, Tulane was led by back to back to back Gophers, Shaughnessy, Bierman and Ted Cox who coached under Bierman at Tulane and Minnesota, followed by a former Tulane player under Bierman who also was on Bierman's coaching staff at Minnesota. During that time those 4 coaches had seasons of 8-1, 9-0-1, 9-0, 8-1, 11-1, 10-1, and 8-1-1. All 4 had winning records at Tulane, all 4 got Tulane ranked high in the rankings. The first 6 years after the 4th one, Red Dawson, left, the most wins they could muster were 4. Of those 27 seasons, only 3 were losing seasons, and one of them was the year a non-Gopher took over for a season. Shaughnessy returned the next year and restored them to their winning ways. The other 2 were proceeded by a 9-0-1 season in CS's 2nd to last year and followed by going 6-3-1 in Bierman's 2nd season there and then 28-2 the last 3 years of Bierman's time there.

Bernie Bierman who, after Tulane, went on to Minnesota where he won 5 Natl Titles in 8 years and it took a frigging World War to end his domination of college football. He would be Henry William's FOURTH College Football Hall of Fame coach that was one of his former players.

Now, who played for Bernie Bierman?

Bud Grant. Yeah, the guy in BOTH the CFL Hall of Fame and the NFL Hall of Fame.

Bud Wilkinson. I don't need to tell you about him, do I??? Cfb Hall of Fame Coach.

Jim Malosky. At the time he retired, he was the winningest cfb coach in NCAA Div 2 cfb history. UMD named their football stadium after him.

Dan Devine - the Notre Dame Natl Title winning coach played for Jim Malosky at UMinn-Duluth.

Milt Bruhn - Led Wisconsin to their best season ever in 1962.

Dave Skrien - won CFL Coach of the Year in 1963 and the Grey Cup Championship in 1964, his 2nd of 3 trips to the Grey Cup Title game.

Dwight T Reed - Lincoln Univ named their football stadium after him.

Cal Stoll - was an asst coach for 2 of MSU's Natl Title teams of the 60s and coached Wake Forest to a Conf Title and he coached an Italian Football team to an Italian Championship.

Tony Dungy played for Cal Stoll at Minnesota and of course you know he made the Vikings Defense the best in the league, he made Tampa into a team that could win a Super Bowl and then won a Super Bowl himself with Indy, and was the first black coach to do so. Now he's in the NFL Hall of Fame.

Marc Trestman played for Cal Stoll at Minnesota and won several Grey Cup Titles.

Hockey Hall of Famer John Mariucci also played football for Bernie Bierman and played alongside Bud Wilkinson on the Gopher hockey team as well.

I have it all written down somewhere, but this is all I remember off the top of my head.

Verne Gagne also played football for Bernie Bierman.

Well, Iowa wouldn't know what it means to be a Cradle of Coaches. Does Iowa have any Fortune 500 companies? What has Iowa ever done that anyone outside of Iowa would be impressed with?

lol, that he may have been. But his being a great song writer can not be denied. His being the first songwriter to win a Nobel Prize for Literature doesn't hurt his case for this.
