Well first of all Happy New Years to you Hillbillies!

I hope 2020 is the best year for you and your families!

Had an Epiphany watching the Playoff Games...or maybe a cold dose of reality....I watched an LSU team decimate a team we have yet to beat in conference play..watching what ELITE talent does when the spotlight is the brightest...The same for the Ohio State Clemson game

I unfortunately in that moment as the game ended realized West Virginia will never win a NC with the talent they are able to recruit no matter who is coaching, unless that coach can annually recruit a top 10 class...and that AIN"T never going to happen..I guess I'm going to readjust my lens and be OKAY with playing in a Conference Championship or finish high enough in the conference to play in a decent weather bowl game and enjoy...

The system as it has been for a long time is set up to exclude the 2nd tier and lower teams from "winning" the invitational "playoff" as urban Meyer said a few years ago, "I'm glad it is TCU and Baylor, rather than Oklahoma and Texas " there is no champion in div 1a college football, so why worry about what is nothing more than a popularity contest!! We just need to worry about things under WVUs control, run a clean program, graduate decent human beings, win against our rivals, try to win the league, and let the rest take care of itself.

Happy New Year!

I actually thought OU was going to play better than what they did. They lost a Safety before the game, a DB due to targeting during the game, and their top LB during the game. I thought OU offense would have done better.

As far as OSU, I fed into the “their the MOST complete team” in the country. I didn’t think Clemson’s D could keep up with OSU down the stretch.

Need to start a petition that OU and OSU have a 4 year ban from being selected into the Series. They get in and screw the pooch.

No doubt!! Those two get in based on their name above more worthy teams!!!!! Then get their clocks cleaned most of the time.

I was pretty impressed with at least 3 of those teams..( OU being the exceotion) of how fast, sklilled and the depth those teams had...LSU was off the charts good....

We had a window under the BCS and the Big East where we could go undefeated and have one big game. Nehlen came close a couple of times. The current situation is impossible.

Things have changed with the transfer portal and another seizemic change will happen when players can market their faces and make money.

Not long ago WVU put up 70 on Clemson in the orange bowl. Dabo had a plan though and built it up. While it may be possible that Neil could do something similar, it is highly unlikely.

When I left the infamous 13-9 and sold my NC tickets, I realized that that was likely our last chance to make a NC for WVU football.

We can still be a basketball school.

As long as there is not a real champion, no one without the name has a chance. Remember the real reason we had the bowl alliance, bowl coalition, BSC, and now the "playoff" BYU was voted champion in 1984, and all stops were pulled out to insure that it never happened again!!!!!

I agree...the only pathway is a Basketball NC....

I could see us in a very good year taking the B12, but winning 2 playoff games would be nearly impossible.

There is the Clemson plan which we could do. Who knows, HCNB could be the guy. After 5 years, we could be in a position where we draw many 4* players. With proper management of redshirts and transfers, get a senior laden team with an exceptional QB. Luck out on a Joe Burrow type QB and a run is possible. Once you get there the recruiting will follow but you have to be a destination school. When you are in the running for the NC, you quickly become a destination school.

The biggest problem with this plan is that the coach needs to stay when the bluebloods and NFL teams come calling with truckloads of cash. Baylor looked to have a good thing going and could have been the next B12 powerhouse. Now the coach is in the NFL. I could easily see the same with HCNB.

Penn State is a different animal. They are getting the 4* talent right now. Give then a Joe Burrow and I could see them in the playoff with a real chance to win. We need to get to that plateau before we can even think about sniffing at the playoff.

In recent years, we have seen the QB position elevate teams to elite level despite defenses which weren’t shut down like. Last year, I hoped Will Grier would be that kind of QB for us. A QB like Kyler Murray... Baker Mayfield... Treyvone Boykin.

Joe Burrow turned into that kind of QB this year. At season’s end, the LSU defense got healthy... and was much improved. At the start of the season, they had trouble stopping Texas.

IMO, WVU needs to have a QB capable of being a Kyler Murray... Baker Mayfield.. Boykin... to have any kind of chance to win the CFP.

The talent that the top teams are bringing in every year is too much of a hurdle to overcome.

I don’t believe HCNB is the kind of coach who can take us to this level. His attack plays to their strengths... does not exploit their weaknesses. A couple of upset wins when he was at Troy does not convince me that he has the offensive mind to overcome.

When you look back to our best seasons, QB play was the key. Major Harris, Jake Kelchner, Pat White, Jeff Hostetler were the names that brought success. With average QB play, these teams would not have had a chance.

I still give HCNB a mulligan for last year. We have a new OC and hopefully HCNB will develop as a coach with experience. We really did not have many matchups that we could take advantage of last year. This is more about personnel than scheme. Our offense would have been fine last year with 4 more offensive lineman who could block. When you have no push on runs and no time on passes, the offensive game plan is severely limited.

1.Quarterback
1a.D line
2. O line

That will make it happen for any team.

Easier said than done and WVU imo will have to develop and nab off of the transfer portal...
but not impossible.

As I have watched many years of football, I have seen that most teams have good to great skill players, and while they can and do make plays there is a constant in the blue bloods that is lacking in the "lesser teams" elite linemen. We have seen the great teams that Alabama, OSU, LSU, ND, etc win with lesser QBs, but great line play. A great line can make an average QB look great, and poor line play can stifle a great QB, so I would say::
1) O line
1a) D line
2)QB
2b) RB

The best QB in the world is ineffective when he has Dlinemen in his face every play!!!

I should have clarified, imo at the college level, not just a QB but a mobile QB for the reason you mentioned. IMO a mobile QB takes away some of that aggressiveness that good Dlines have to disrupt offenses by making them pay for missing their mark.
I agree, prob THE biggest difference between the elite teams and the rest is line recruiting/development/play, both sides of the ball.
WVU (as well as many other "2nd tier" teams/programs) can go toe to toe with just about anyone when it comes to skill people but we have to work a little harder to compete in those areas.

It could be done the way Don Nehlen did it. He would sacrifice a year or two of poor seasons to build up his team for one good run.Do you think it was a coincidence that WVU was REALLY good every 5 years under Nehlen? I think Neal Brown has a similar mentality. This team was sacrificed for the future...

I don't believe this was the plan concocted by Nehlen. It was a pattern we could look and find though. Nehlen simply couldn't recruit superstars right out of high school. He kept recruiting and building teams. Sometimes it worked...

IMO... Brown may have more in common with RichRod than I would have thought this time last year. He needs certain types of players to man positions in his offense to run it in the way he sees the game. Nehlen would adjust his offense to match the skill set of his players. Dana adjusted his offense as well. Rich was forcing Nehlen kids into his scheme and attack no matter the consequence. I feel Brown has done the same...
