Hard to spin this as being a positive as a Bosox fan, though. If it ends up being a shitty contract, not a big deal with the Yanks' revenue stream.

This is a wildly overstated point. The Yankees have more money than other teams but it isn't the vast difference it once was.

Maybe one day baseball will stop the madness with these deals.

No they aren't.

I hate the Yankees but whining about them while ignoring all the other ridiculous money that other teams have given players is absurd.

The Yankees overspent for Cole. But it pales in comparison to the Harper deal last year given past performances.

You apparently don't get the long standing joke. Perhaps your sense of humor is tarnished from all of the time you spend on the PF.

They can't afford to just throw money around wildly, but they could get around Cole's contract being a disappointment more easily than any other team.
I honestly wonder how much more they are expecting to get out of Stanton.... kind of scary when a massive guy like him missed basically an entire season with like six different injuries. I'm not predicting his career is over, but how many teams could get almost nothing from a guy making that kind of money and just roll along nicely with little comment from fans and writers about the lack of contribution?

Ridiculous sim of money. Not that the Yankees can't afford it but my god this just means the next pitcher will get $400 million
The amount just keeps going up every time a prime pitcher hits free agency. I remember back in the day every time a big time pitcher hit free agency we never saw numbers like this.

There are a bunch of team that close to the Yankees in wealth. Red Sox, Dodgers, Cubs, Mets(outside of their owners being in financial trouble).

The Yankees overspent for Cole. But it pales in comparison to the Harper deal last year given past performances.
Harper is definitely going to be way overpaid but when I look at his past performance and the performances of outfielders in general I think it is still a kind of "safe" bet for a gm. He'll never live up to the salary but I think he has a high enough floor that at least for the next 8 years or so even if he has a not so great year it will still be good enough that they are glad to have him in the lineup.

In my opinion, the salaries of the different players will never seem "fair" because I think the most valuable players are the 2nd,3rd,ss,catchers that can also hit. But those positions are more demanding and physically most players slow down a little by their late 20's So you have to be careful when you sign one of them for a long term free agent contract because if a second baseman's defensive ability goes downhill to the point where you have to move him to first base, suddenly a guy who was a great hitter for a middle infielder is just another good hitting first baseman.

The good part about all this is it makes it harder for the big market teams to just "buy" everybody, because the best years of those positions are usually near the beginning of their career when they are not making any money so the small market teams hang onto them.

That's just my opinion though and I'm a Phililes fan so I will have to watch the Harper contract play out one way or another. It will be interesting to see what Rendon gets. He seems to be right around his peak right now and last year he was way more valuable than Harper.

can't they just replace the whole thing? Steve Austin got an arm, a leg and an eye for 6mil. back in the 70's. I know you have to adjust for inflation but you'd think the chinese would be able to do it for a fraction of the cost by now.

He's a good player but that's way to long a deal and to much money for him IMO.

Got to wait for the trade agreement to get settled with China...they'll rebuild the whole arm with soybeans....:pound:

Reading now that the Dodgers topped out at 8/$300M, which is actually a higher AAV than the Yanks deal.

Cole was going to take it until Tommy Lasorda trapped him in the corner of a room with his wheelchair and ranted about Kurt Bevacqua, Dave Kingman, and the Phillie Phanatic for three hours
