Data cap fees coming to internet provider near you. Apparently the desperation is starting. Some cable companies are instituting data caps even if you originally signed up for unlimited data. To continue your unlimited plan you will have to pony up another 50 bucks a month or pay a fee for every so much data over the new cap.

Cant wait for Starlink and Amazon next year. Gonna be a whole lot of traditional cable company employees being let go when that happens.

Wow wonder what is taking so long, COX instituded this years ago (for all but their most expensive tier which was less bandwidth than gigabit fiber from centurylink) Thankfully it forced me to go to gigabit fiber from Centurylink (a non cable option) there are multiple options here and in Lincoln too.

Surprisingly there are not a ton in my state. Especially out in the boonies where I live. Also, Caps vary by state. Some providers charge the cap in some states but not others so it is somewhat of a crapshoot.

There is the option to use T-mobile or AT@T 4G network for internet with a hotspot but the speeds top out at 100mbs.

I also noticed the link does not mention Verizon at all. What gives?

It is odd that Verizon isn't listed at all. I did some investigating, because the two major choices here are Spectrum (which I've had for years) and Verizon.

Your phone's unlimited data plan isn't really unlimited — this is what you really get

Verizon doesn't have data caps, where you get charged more if you go over a set limit. Instead, they use "throttling" to slow people after they've hit a certain threshold. The article I linked in the post above frowns on throttling, but that still doesn't explain why they aren't listed.

Thats what they do here in RI too. Both internet and phone. Some of the phone companies just drop you to 3G instead of slowing down your 4G which is better IMO.

Hey, I know you are a plex guy so I figured I would pass along in case you didnt see it yet. Apparently Plex app has a new Movie and TV section. Just has a 20 second commercial before the show. Let us know if it is any good.

I'll look into it, I don't keep up with all they have been doing since I only use it for a local media server. I remember them dabbling in that space a while back

A reminder of what happens to people who get greedy and try to make money off other people's copyrights:

Computer programmers plead guilty to operating popular illegal streaming service sites

Government got them because they were money laundering. You dont really think they give a crap about copyright issues. Look at all the stupid fraud advertising that goes on and all the identity theft. Government does nothing for millions who money is flat out stolen from their bank accounts. No way they give 2 shits about this stuff. Dont pay your taxes though and it is a different story.

Zero fucks given.

So i updated my server today (yea the update came out on the 4th bla bla bla) anyway looking at it seems that it is not terribly different from the library's of things like Pluto/Crackle, or even VUDU's free movie library sponsored by ads. There are some "plex exclusive" items. It was hard to find because it added a similar tab to my dashboard (front end of the server)

You can sign up for plex free, they have a plex pass that costs money for a premium user but not needed ( i used to do that but havent found the need in years) even if your server contains zero media you can still have one and keep it private ( i dont have mine accessible outside the house so no ports are open/listening plus it is blocked at the router) Then Plex has an app for just about everything out there these days. Plex home Theater for PC (also has a browser based login/front end) Android/Fire TV/iOS/Roku/Xbox/Playstation/Kodi/a host of smart tv's etc its just another legit option.

Thanks, More people should start doing this. I appreciate the info. Might give it a look over the holidays.

More companies are doing it, the more they find ways to support APP only viewing (so you cant use ad block software to skip their ads) they are doing ad supported free media content.

There are a handful out there that are worth looking into i read a good cablecutters article listing the free ones and the various "exclusives" they have. Ive debated cutting out YTTV but the wife always asks "why" i figure meh its 50 bucks a month i dont have to spend on TV and when it isnt football season i can more than be okay with it. i mean 450 bucks a year is a new toy/gadget.

Pluto TV has been having better and better offerings, especially from one of the biggest pricks in the media business (viacom) offering nick jr type shows etc

Cool. I worry about Pluto though. Got a feeling it wont be free for too long. I had it back in the day and am happy for that dude that he finally got paid. Just think its only a matter of time before there is not enough money rolling in to satisfy the big media greed.

I think Pluto TV has been helping set the trend to legitimately provide a service. Not 100% sure how the big guys come to deals etc but they obviously know things are free to the end user.

It is essentially a new wave of OTA offerings except in this case the air is the internet.

Sling just raised their prices $5 a month (although they added some channels). Both Dish and AT&T now also increasing. I guess they are determined to go down in flames as they just keep digging their hole deeper instead of adapting to the changing times.

Ever since I dropped cable, Spectrum has been sending me ads about once a week telling me I can add cable for $44.99 with no contract. I'm guessing that's fairly competitive; I just don't watch enough cable to get my money's worth. They did have some nice features, in particular being able to watch from pretty much anywhere/anything that has an internet connection.

Spectrum actually has a 15 and 30 dollar streaming package provided you are using their interent, was just reading it on the cordcutters reddit
