Did Notre Dame get screwed in the bowl selection?

First off, I don't like Notre Dame at all, but I found myself reading this article, and kind of agreeing with it. Someone talk me off the ledge here! They played 5 top 25 teams (losing to #5 and #14 both on the road)

Barstool Sports

The problem is all the agreements that the bowls have with conferences. Virginia does not deserve to be playing Florida. Notre Dame would have been a better choice.

ND is eligible for any ACC Bowl Tie-In. With one exception. They are not allowed to be the ACC Champ
in the Orange Bowl or ACC Rep if the champ is in the playoffs. This year they are in the league's 3rd best
bowl, behind the Playoffs and the Orange Bowl. (ND is eligible for a visitor spot in the Orange Bowl.) They
probably lost that spot because it would be a rematch vs UVA, plus ND was not a top 12 team which is required
to be an at-large selection.

When ND gets an ACC spot they qualify for an equal share of league bowl revenues. If they make the
playoffs or play in one of the elite 5 bowl games, they do not have to share their money with the ACC,
BUT, they get a reduced amount of bowl money.

I'll give you an example. The ACC Champ/Rep receives 27 mil for an Orange Bowl appearance vs
the Big10/SEC tie-in for the at-large spot. That at-large spot gets 27 mil also. If ND is the at-large
team at the Orange Bowl they would get 13 mil while the ACC champ/rep gets 40 mil.

When ND gets an elite 6 bowl bid, they do not qualify for a share of league bowl money.

ND's relationship with the ACC: It's complicated.

they are getting shafted because they are independent. but if they qualify for a bowl, they don't have to share revenue. nowever they also run the risk of getting left out of the big six because they don't belong to a conference.

it seems their financial model is working.

what really needs to happen is a legit playoff being adopted.

True. Make it two divisions.

Teams like Boise State don't belong unless they can get into a P5 conference.

Perfect. P5 Division, and and FCS division that is already in place.

Then the true 5 Conference Champs fight for who isn't the worst of the last bid of their Conference Champ and .... Viola! That is exactly what we have.

What an amazing concept.

I am sort of surprised that the Orange Bowl, the ACC and ND didn't work out an agreement to send ND to the Orange as the anchor team and Virginia to the CWB but the ACC keep the Orange Bowl payout and ND the CWB Payout. Florida vs. Notre Dame and Iowa State vs. Virginia would both be excellent match-ups.

i was thinking take the top 16, cancel the conference championships, and play round 1 instead.

the shit we have now is what's retarded.

FCS isn't bad.

At least you can win Championships.

You really think Boise could be in the Pac 12 and compete for championships in that conference year in and year out? And IF they win that conference, then win a 2 round Playoff with the the rest of the P5 Conference Champs?

I mean, come on, man. Utah is a much more solid program with much more support in $s and fans, and the Pac12 has been great for them, but they can't win a title. You think Boise would find it better?

After watching what Michigan did to ND — I’m more shocked they won 10 games than I am about the bowl games they received.

boise has had teams that have more than held their own with pac 12 teams. the fact is boise isn't in the pac 12 and hasn't been invited to join. and even if they were, the school has other sports programs that it may not work for.

and what does boise to do with notre dame, florida, or the many other teams playing in meaningless bowls? boise isn't even in the top 16.

Welp, you just answered yourself.

Maybe you could compete some weeks. Certainly not every week. Utah found that out, and with their best team in a decade they still got punked.

And no, you don't match up in sports, and there is no academic reason why the Pac12 would want or need Boise.

Like I said. There are 2 divisions in FBS football. WE need to quit fucking around and make the separation.

the only point i was trying to make is your argument is foolish. boise doesn't have a choice whether to join the the pac 12, and you can't assume just because a team is from a smaller school they can't compete with bigger school's. ask oregon and oklahoma. that's why they play the games.

utah has also beaten alabama in the sugar bowl.

what division is nebraska in btw? 5-7 is an improvement at least. lol

Notre Dame gets fucked from time to time because of their situation. Most years they do fine. It's just part of the cost of being independent.

Plus we're tired of their shit.
Worked in our favor last year

As I said, when Utah moved to the Pac12 they found the waters much much deeper than before.

Recycling back to the halcyon days of when your Boise team beat Oklahoma on a Statue of Liberty play and a Hook and Lateral are as long gone as Nebraska winning 3 Natty's in 4 years in the 90s.

In a single game setting with nothing to lose, sure, upsets happen. In a week in and week out grind, we've seen what Utah is/was.

Boise had a great run. Your fans should all be proud.

utah went 11-1 this year. seems they can compete.

in a given year a smaller school can also compete for the national championship. smaller schools like boise st that are shut out hurts their recruiting and causes their coaches to go to take jobs at bigger schools. otherwise they might be able to compete with p5 schools on a consistent basis.

Only a 7 pt advantage for ND? That would indicate it's not a terrible matchup.

The 14 pts Florida is favored over Virgina shows what BS that game will be.
