First off, I don't like Notre Dame at all, but I found myself reading this article, and kind of agreeing with it. Someone talk me off the ledge here! They played 5 top 25 teams (losing to #5 and #14 both on the road)

I was actually thinking about that myself. What a shitty bowl game selection for a top 15 selection. Finish the year 10-2 with only two road losses to top 15 teams, beat two ranked teams in convincing fashion, only to go to a website game. Meanwhile, because of bullshit conference tie-ins, the same UVA team that ND crushed, who finished with twice as many losses gets to go to a NY6 game.

It's almost as if ND should consider joining a conference...

That last line is why I feel no pity for ND

They probably deserved a better bowl. But the amount of entitlement that "article" was dripping with-the author can piss off.

yeah, the whole "turn down the bowl invitation" was such a dumb idea. I'm assuming if they turn down the bowl game, they shut down practices for the season. So, because they didn't get a better bowl game, let's stick a knife in our leg?

The conferences have most of the best bowls locked up and there isn’t room for ND. To be honest they are lucky we let them into the BCS and playoff system at all.

If it weren’t for the ACC throwing them a lifeline for their non-football sports they wouldn’t have had a choice but to join.

I actually like ND but the road they chose isn’t working for the rest of us and they just need to bite the bullet.

All P5 conferences need to go to 14 teams and form a Super Division and get rid of the NCAA.

The latest line I see for the game has ND at -3.5 vs IState. The line isn't dissing the pairing like Barstool Sports. There are many other bowl pairings with larger spreads.

Yeah, Notre Dame played 5 Top 25 teams, but only two of them were in the top 15. The other three were ranked #'s 22, 23, & 24 - and at least two of those rankings were questionable.

Ohio St. played 3 top 15 teams - four, if you count both times against #8 Wisconsin - and #21 Cincinnati. A much stronger schedule, even if they both played the same number of Top 25 teams.

LSU played four - all ranked in the top 15. Oklahoma played two (only one in the Top 10), even though Oklahoma St. was questionable as a Top 25 member. Clemson's lone Top 25 opponent (Virginia) was highly questionable.

I can understand the dude On the Barstool questioning Virginia's inclusion in the Orange Bowl. The problem is that the ACC has a tie-in to that game and had no worthy teams available, except Clemson, and the Tigers are already bound for the College Football Playoff.

Memphis earned their trip to the Cotton Bowl, as did Baylor to the Sugar Bowl. The Bears have served their time on probation.

I can remember many times in the past when Notre Dame bumped a more deserving team out of a bowl, or got higher rankings than a team that finished better than them, but they got the honors just because they were Notre Dame. If they want a better bowl game, they need to win more games. They are lucky not to be in the Cheez-It bowl.

Yeah. ND did this to themselves. Bowls have conference tie-ins. Unless they make a NY6 bowl or the playoff, they get hosed without a conference. Join a conference and get better bowls.

Historically they’ve turned down bowl games in the past (if they weren’t big enough). Yes they lose out on the prescribe time but it’s not unprecedented at ND. Of course that was under the old bowl structure (even before the BCS era).

Of course for decades the university didn’t even allow them to go to bowl games.

That’s because Vegas acknowledges ISU’s close losses.

Who’s “we”? I know the conferences want to rule CFB but that’s not how it works.

And it was harder, not easier for ND to get a bowl bid under the BCS system. And they basically have to go undefeated to even be considered for the playoffs. Most teams can afford at least one loss.

I can't imagine any decent program in this modern era will turn down a bowl game, even if it seems belittling. It's free practice time. The one thing that is a precious commodity due to the restrictions often put on it during the year.

well, considering they are only favored by 3 points against the 6th best team in the Big 12, then the answer is clearly no. They're just not very good.
