This show has a very distinctive “stage” feel to it. The extras are SUPER choreographed and unrealistic.

Kinda has a drama-nerd flavor. Similar to Birdman.

Just watched the wedding episode. I can’t stand cringe moments. That whole thing was too unrealistic to take at all seriously. Same feel with the Paris stand up routine. Comedy is about timing. And that does not come from some random person translating what you are saying without any prep.

I understand this is essentially theater on film, but that sort of thing is one reason I am not a huge theater fan.

I am not typically a big Alex Borstein fan, but Susie is the real star of this show. She is a bull dyke before bulldykes even existed.

I agree about the wedding scene... I almost fastforwarded it because you saw it happening a mile away...

I disagree about the paris comedy scene... Sure comedy is based on timing, but it is also about the shock value... and back then(when this show takes place) a woman saying these things is shocking AF... and could be seen to be very funny even without the timing...

And it is possible to find an energetic person to relay the jokes, like she did in this scene... you think if the woman she asked didn't get laughs, that she would have continued with her schtick???

One scene that impressed the hell out of me was in, I believe, the S2 finale where the husband his friend are hitting balls in Central Park. I think that whole scene was a single take, and they were both hitting every ball, and never hit the camera. While delivering their lines.

That was impressive.

Three episodes in, I really like it. I think her timing and delivery is actually really good.

Watching S3...

still a HUGE theater feel. But the opening scene at the USO was an impressive, feat. 1 single take. The path of the Jeep at the very beginning made absolutely zero sense, but I am willing to ignore that.

One thing that REALLY takes me out of the show, though, is that Midges routines are VERY unfunny.

Haha. If you don't Midges routines funny, its hard to imagine you liking this series. There's definitely more to the show than her but her act is a very big part of it.

Susie makes the show worth while. And following their lives is interesting. Her standup, though... it is like watching a show about a successful fictional singer, but the song the writers wrote just aren’t any good. You just suspend your disbelief while they demonstrate their “gift”.

Don't like the show and can't figure out why anyone else would.

There are a lot of other great characters in the show for sure. Susie, her Dad etc.
I like her routines a lot and think they're really funny but that me. It is also about "showbiz" in the 60's too.

The artistic fashion is also very distinct. I am not a fan of it, but I can acknowledge and appreciate it.

I think you may be viewing 1960-ish comedy through a 2019 POV. I have Sirius and often have it tuned to their comedy channels. Once in awhile they'll broadcast something 50ish years old.. I'm talking all-time greats like Dangerfield, and it just isn't all that funny by current day standards.

Reviews for this season are not as universally positive as the first 2 seasons so I was prepared for that. But I thoroughly enjoyed the first 2 episodes we watched last night. I guess I'm invested in the other characters, other than Midge & Susie, as well. Hell, Joel is my least favorite character on the show by far and I even enjoyed his new story line about the club he wants to develop in Chinatown.
