Anderson back in the fold. I'm glad, I think he could be a nice bounce back.

Typically, when this happens, the team doesn't want to pay the player even as high as last year's salary (not to mention what he could get in arbitration). I assume that when the numbers come in, they will be something less than what he earned in 2019.

I love the lead-in that knbr.com had on this story : "In an offseason that surely will see many candidates, Tyler Anderson is leading the Giants in transactions."

So the non-tender was a "skirt the regulations" move. The rules state that the min a player can get in arb is 80% of the year before. Anderson made $2.625M last year. By 'non-tendering' him (wink, wink) he was a free agent (wink, wink) and able to sign any contract for any amount with any team (wink, wink). The team and Anderson probably had a handshake deal in place before he was non-tendered. Since he's injured (knee surgery this past June) and probably won't be healthy at the beginning of spring training, he's got a guaranteed contract for 2020 (although the details haven't been released). And the Giants get a former first round draft pick for chump change in the minors while he recovers and not THAT much in the majors (hopefully). Tyler gets a chance to prove himself (can he stay healthy? How well can he pitch?) outside the confines of Coors, AND (yes, repeating myself) he has a guaranteed contract for 2020, which is better for him than a poke in the eye.

Oh, and his salary (arb numbers) for 2021 will be based off the salary he agreed to for 2020, not the $2.6M he earned in 2019.

Its not unusual to see a few of these every year. I just don't remember the Giants doing this in any of the past 10 offseasons.

So if he's healthy in May, he might make 20-25 starts (130+ innings) and spend 150 days on the 26-man, earning him ... $2.6M. Not bad for either side. If he is 100% in June (and got called up in june), he'd (probably) earn $1.7M and still get a chance to show how good he is (and he won't be a free agent until after the 2021 season at the earliest). It is pretty much a win-win deal (for both parties).

I am giving him rope, but he has not earned my trust yet.

and so far, I just don’t enjoy how he is doing it. If he wins, I will make peace with it (maybe), but I just don’t enjoy A’s baseball.

I don't think it's the A's we should be looking to, it's more the dodgers (that felt dirty typing) where we'll get an more similar understanding of his style.

He did what he did with the A's out of necessity. He was active with the dodgers too, but he's certainly not afraid to keep guys around if they deserve it (Turner, Kershaw, Jansen) unlike the A's.

Jokes aside, the Giants aren't comparable to the A's at all, am I right? The Giants should be up there in comparison with the dodgers, yankees, Red Sox, Cubs etc. Comparing anything the Giants do in the same light as the A's is apples to oranges.

The roster-churning is very A’s-like. And I am not a fan.

Again, I am trying to keep an open mind, but this just isn’t what I am used to. The Giants have had a similar philosophy for my entire baseball life. Seeing that philosophy completely turned on its head is jarring.

I don't really think they're alike at all, so far. The A's churn productive, fan-favorite players because they are too cheap to pay them.

The Giants are churning players, yes, but the majority of it has been with guys who aren't producing or haven't even played. When Zaidi gets his guys I don't think he'll be afraid at all to lock them up.

However, from San Francisco Giants Rumors - MLB Trade Rumors

The Giants have acquired infielder Zack Cozart and shortstop prospect Will Wilson from the Angels for cash considerations, Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times reports. San Francisco will pay all of Cozart’s $12.167MM salary for 2020, per Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.

{...}

Considering Wilson’s involvement, this may be a case of the Giants essentially buying a prospect. The 21-year-old Wilson, formerly with North Carolina State, is just months removed from joining the Angels as the 15th pick in the 2019 draft. The Angels paid $3.4MM to lock up Wilson at the time, but they’ve now deemed him expendable in an effort to get Cozart’s money off the books.

Zack Cozart stats

Will Wilson stats

And (also from MLBTR) :

"The Giants have signed right-hander Kevin Gausman, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic was among those to report. It’s a one-year, $9MM contract with up to $1MM in performance bonuses, the team announced.

If he maxes out his bonuses, Gausman will end up with almost the same payday he’d have received had the Reds retained him for 2020. They moved on from Gausman at last week’s non-tender deadline in lieu of paying him a projected $10.6MM next season
."

Apparently the Giants almost took Wilson at 10 last year, so they are VERY high on Wilson.

he probably slots in as our new #5 prospect (Bart, Ramos, Luciano, Bishop, Wilson)

Giants tooks Dany Jimenez from the Blue Jays in the Rule 5 draft today. His K-rate last year is nice and he put up some nice numbers in AA.

It seems that teams don't see much value in this draft any longer. Only 11 guys (9 pitchers) were taken in the major league portion. No Giant farm hands were drafted in this portion but one former Giant, Stephen Woods, was drafted from the Rays by the Royals.
