I'm reminded of the Chick Hearn call during a game, when he described an opposing player as "hanging on the rim long enough to eat a banana."

Hearn was obviously not a racist, and he didn't intend the comment to be racist, but he immediately recognized it for what it was, which was racist. He publicly apologized and was largely forgiven. He said he received a total of four angry letters about it. But of course, this was way before the advent of social media, and I think if Hearn made that same comment in today's world, he would be fired.

Obviously he should not say that, but this is interesting. What if he just said he is helped out by the dark uniform and didn't mention the skin color. Would his comment be treated differently? I like to try and infer intent and I don't think he had racist thoughts in his mind when he said this but I am of course only going off my reading of the story. Lest my comments be misconstrued, I'm also not stating I agree with him.

Let's start a movement to make the Ravens wear white tops only. Test the theory.

I like the idea of making the football a neon color.

Pink so we can be aware of breast cancer all the time.

What about Cosell's little monkey comment about Alvin Garrett? He made similar comment about a white back once if I recall.

Stupid comment but not a racist one.

All he said was Jackson had dark skin which anyone with a working set of eyes can see that's the case. There really wasn't any malice behind the comment in terms of Jackson being black.

In context I can see the point he was trying to make in that being black, wearing a black uniform, in poor weather conditions makes it tougher for the defense to tell if he has the ball or not but it's still stupid point and a poor homer excuse as to why the defense didn't do a better job of defending the option.

The 9ers defense did a bad job of defending the option because the ends just crashed down the LOS leaving the outside open. They adjusted to it in the 2nd half hence why the Ravens went scoreless the entire 2nd half until the final seconds to get the game winning FG.

I think it wasn't overtly racist in terms of the announcers intentions but anytime you try to attribute the success of a player on their race or color as opposed to their talent you're heading for trouble.

Although the dark Raven uniforms could help.

Road uniforms white: 398 yards rushing
Home uniforms dark: 579 yards rushing

YPC better on the road

Yes, if Cosell said something like that today, he would also probably be fired...after they torched his zombie corpse, of course

Eh, maybe he has a point? Doubt it though unless the SF players all didn't wear their contacts or something. Still just a dumbass thing to say. No way that ever ends well for you.

If he didn't say it with racist intent then only the interpretations are actually racist.

No, there was no malicious intent and he did issue a heartfelt apology.
However, it was wrong and there is no defending what he said. Subtle racism is still racism. The color of a person's skin should never, ever be relevant. Not to mention, it was an utterly stupid comment to begin with.
Why did we wear camoflauge on our skin in the military then? I will concede in today Cancel Culture where everyone is offended by everything he should have known better.

Chick Hearn was also a legend, a Lakers announcer everyone loved and had heard for years, so he got more of a pass.

Did this guy apologize? I didn't see that. If he had quickly done so, maybe he gets off. But in the social media era, that needs to be within minutes of saying the stupid shit.

Racist comment is pretty accurate. I don't know if that was his angle, maybe it was, but just hearing the take I didn't come away thinking that. Stupid definitely fits.

On you point in bold...hand raised...clearly he proved to be as fast as advertised and had a decent arm as a rookie, but I didn't see him having this kind of success in year two...I don't think anyone did outside of Baltimore. IMO he's still going to need some growth as a passer (he's not going to be that fast and shifty his entire career) but the kid is pretty good.

I certainly never saw him becoming this good. Even after he had some success as a rookie. But credit the Ravens and Greg Roman for catering the offense to his strengths. He's like Kaep, only accurate.

when i first read the story, my immediate thought was, "wow! so @Montalban is one of the guys on the 49ers' radio broadcast team??! neat!"
I mighta been thinking it but I'm not dumb enough to say it on air. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but you are not entitled to express that opinion; not in today's ridiculous Cancel Culture.
The problem with that statement is it contains just enough logic to make it believable and I think that is what is bothering people. It seems pretty innocent to me.
