Wish we would sign him. He is the player I want the most.
same here but I have doubts that we will get close. figure the Angels and Nationals are offering 7 years and more than 230M and I doubt the Rangers ownership will go more than 5 years 150M

I like Rendon, I do, but comparing his signing to Beltre's is misguided, The bat is comparable but what worries me about Rendon is his defense over the course of the contract, in addition to his ability to stay healthy (which can often be related), while now he is a solid average to a slightly above average 3B, how will that trend in years to come?

For example in his age 29 season Rendon had a 355 chances, 11 errors, .969 FLD%, a range factor of 2.45, .3 dWAR, and 2 Def. runs saved in 146 games

Beltre's line was 386 chances, 14 errors, a .964 FLD%, RF of 2.77, 3.1 dWAR, and 27 DRS in 136 games

Beltre had more chances in fewer games, meaning more errors on balls that Rendon probably wouldn't had even gotten to

If the standard is quite clearly 7 years, then the Rangers wouldn't be in the discussion right now... I think the decision for Rendon comes down to competitiveness in the future, hence why we need to get another arm for the rotation, doesn't have to be Cole or Strasburg (both would be nice though), but at least someone that can give 150+ quality innings AT LEAST

I am hoping beyond hope that the owners go 7 years and at least 15M more than the projections (245-250M).
as far as another starter, I want at least a quality pitcher who gives us 200+ innings and 250+ SO's

His bat may very well be better than Beltre's.

There are several differences in Beltre's signing and who he was as a player compared to Rendon now. One, is that Beltre was a fallback option for a team that was spurned in their pursuit of their coveted target, Lee. Rendon, on the other hand, is the coveted target, based on media reports.

Not many 3B will ever be compared favorably to Beltre defensively. Buddy Bell may be the closest to ever play for us before or after Adrian.

One way they are alike is that each was/is needed in a big way.

Re potential Rendon signing

I wonder at what point too much is too much. Prospects are prospects and they can move to a different position but we are set up at 3rd base.
That being said Rendon is a glove to hand fit

I just don't think the Rangers are willing to consider upsetting Gallo by putting him at 1st
gotcha, I didn't know he didn't want to be there. That makes sense then, but it would be a good way to save his body the wear and tear.

I believe the only position that Joey has said he prefers not to play is 3B. I don't recall anything coming out about 1B.

Even with 3B, I would imagine Joey could easily be convinced to play there until someone better comes along.

Ideally, we sign Rendon though.

So in 3 years could he move to 1B? Seems like a natural move from 3rd to 1st. And if Jung or another guy doesn't develop then keep Rendon at 3b.

First we have to get him though, and doubt we do that. New A/C park isn't going to change many minds. People want to see if Texas still is a pitching killer park.

don't think the park will be the killer on this. if we fail to get him it will be all about the years and AAV

I am... so you're saying pay Strasburg and Cole for 7 years?
no i'm saying that I would like to have one of them preferably Cole. but I realize that we'll be lucky to even come close to get Rendon.
I believe that we'll probably get the same JD speech we've got the last couple of years: "well we tried but came up short, so we'll just muddle our way thru another season with what players we can get". and we'll sign a couple of tier 4 or 5 pitchers(at least 1 recovering from TJS) and a tier 4 or 5 3rd baseman
