I guess my point is even when Neal is scoring, it barely offsets his negative impact when his team doesn't have the puck. For the record, I hate the trade and don't like Looch, but if anyone thinks James Neal is going to be a difference maker on your team long term, well I'd check what you're smoking.

If the Oilers don't win the McDavid lottery, they're still at the bottom of the league, it's really that simple. Draisiatil is a very good player, but he doesn't impact games the way #97 does. The bottom two lines that Edmonton trots out are filled with borderline NHL players. They got off to a nice start this season mainly due to a cupcake schedule and catching opponents on back-to-back nights, but teams ares settling in now and the chickens are coming home to roost.

Or, they lose the McDavid lottery, pick third or fourth instead, grab Marner, keep the Barzal pick and grab him or Chabot, don't trade Hall or sign Lucic, bottom out the next year and grab Matthews or Laine or PLD, make modest improvement but still miss the playoffs and package that year's first round pick with RNH and Eberle for Panarin and Hjalmarsson and are a much better team today.

Crazy as it is, McDavid lottery win may have been the worst thing to happen to the Oilers at that moment lol.

Well, if the league would have had their shit together, there should have been provisions in place where the Oilers after so many first overall/high draft picks shouldn't even have been in the draft lottery for McDavid. That said, the rest of your post assumes competent management BBB :D

I think even with incompetent management they could've fell ass-backwards into respectability - even if they throw in one trade with stupidity on par with any of the Hall-Larsson or Barzal-Reinhart or Eberle-Strome deals, things would still mostly go their way eventually with all of that talent assuming they don't totally fuck up development (which...valid lol). There would eventually just be far too many talented individuals present to stay permanently bad which is what's happened.

In this season of giving, let's all say a quick prayer for Darnell's quick recovery...

Oilers started the season 7-1-1. They are 10-9-2 since that point.

Matty, remember that Canucks team photo several years ago that showed Luongo sitting by himself at the end of a couple off benches?!? You need to do one for the Oilers and McDavid.

:D
