Week 8- Top 10 List
Well, I'm still here! That means that my town hasn't been drowned in all this rain (at least not as drowned as the towns south of where I live). So with that, let's go ahead with...
(All times are Eastern)
10. Kentucky @ Georgia [6:00, ESPN] (This Saturday, we get to deal with the fallout of Georgia's stunning loss to South Carolina. In the evening hours, we'll see if Georgia can keep their cool at home this time against Kentucky. Oh, and the Wildcats are off their first SEC win of the year, so they should be ready to test the Bulldogs.)
9. Duke @ Virginia [3:30, ACC Network] (Right now, everyone but Georgia Tech is in the running for the ACC Coastal. So after Virginia's tough loss to Miami last week, I hope the Cavs are ready to put their heads down and get back to work. They should be able to beat Duke if they either ignite their running game or stop Duke's QB Quentin Harris. Either plan will work fine.)
8. Florida @ South Carolina [12:00, ESPN] (The Gamecocks finally stole one from that hellish schedule they've been on so far this season. But they can't celebrate as this week, they're hosting an rival in Florida. A rival, by the way, that I don't think really liked getting shredded against LSU 5 days ago. I'm sure that South Carolina can slow down Kyle Trask, but can their own offense score on a fired-up Florida defense?)
7. Arizona @ USC [9:30, PAC-12 Network] (The sleeper game of the week. USC did pretty good against Notre Dame, but to the USC alums a loss is still a loss. However, the Trojans are still in control over their destiny in the PAC-12 South, so if they can beat a high-scoring Arizona team they should be fine. But if 'Zona defeats USC, will Clay Helton be able to survive it?)
6. Baylor @ Oklahoma State [4:00, FOX] (This will be just another "legitimacy test" for the Baylor Bears to see if they're a real contender to the Big 12 title. And what's this? Oklahoma State's Chuba Hubbard has over 1,000 rushing yards already! If I'm the Baylor coaches, I'd create a plan to stop that wiz kid.)
5. Temple @ SMU [3:30, ESPN2] (We know the story about the great ascension that SMU has been on, but remember this: Memphis was on a major roll last week, and Temple knocked them out. It won't just be a QB duel we'll get here; how well will the defenses do? I hope Southern Methodist is ready for a real fight.)
4. Oregon @ Washington [3:30, ABC] (Fresh off a season-saving win over Arizona, the Huskies are now looking for their 3rd win over Oregon in 4 years. They don't care if the PAC-12 hates them after eliminating the Ducks from the national title race; it's a rivalry game and the hatred is gonna flow.
Two problems, though: 1. Justin Herbert is due for a big game statistically; can Washington's defense cope if he gets going?
And 2. Oregon's defense is pretty good; can Washington find a way to break it?)
3. Arizona State @ Utah [6:00, PAC-12 Network] (The Oregon/Washington game may be on network TV, but the PAC-12 Network made sure to hold on to this more important contest. I know I picked Utah to make the playoff 2 months ago, but they certainly won't deserve that honor if they get embarrassed by Herm Edwards and Arizona State... much like what happened last year when the Utes and Sun Devils played.
But the Utes defense SHOULD carry them to victory. It SHOULD.)
2. Clemson @ Louisville [12:00, ABC] (Congrats, Scott Satterfield! Your fine coaching skills has already produced 2 favorable things for Louisville. They've already doubled their win total from a year ago, and they're back on network television! Micale Cunningham has stepped in to be Louisville's leader, but against Clemson he needs to have his breakout performance.)
1. Michigan @ Penn State [7:30, ABC] (I wanted to start this by singing about Michigan's manhood, but I chose not to. These Wolverines KNOW that this is the most important game so far this year in terms of national respect and prestige. As for Penn State, they're now starting to think national championship, and the fans are hoping that their defense can withstand THIS big test.)
Game with the best chance to be a bust: Boise State @ BYU (Boise should be able to easily bypass BYU and get to 7-0 this week. Does ANYBODY remember that BYU was beating teams like USC and Tennessee last month?)
Honorable mentions for the Top 10: Ohio State @ Northwestern, TCU @ Kansas State, North Carolina @ Virginia Tech, Tulane @ Memphis, and LSU @ Mississippi State.
My prediction segment is next!
