I thought a 1st made sense for teams that thought they would be picking in the late 20's or later. Trading away a possible top 5-10 pick overall when you need a QB is another story

:noidea:

It could take a couple of years to know for sure how it pans out.

In today's NFL you have to maximize your opportunities to get talent....especially if you're sucking hind tit. The front office has to identify where the team is deficient and identify potential talent months before Goodell calls the first pick.

Move first, move best...but yeah, don't fuck it up as well! :dhd:

The draft is a crap shoot. Having a lot of picks increases your chances of finding a stud or gives you the ability to move around and or make trades.

Even if the majority of picks from one or two drafts pan out, and if they're quality all those contracts hit at once. That's why you need balance and finding players that fit your system.

NE is the perfect model. Sure TB12 was THE diamond in the rough. Regardless NE is always drafting near the bottom or losing picks (Thanks Goodell) yet still remain the cream of the crop.

CBS predicted that the Steelers will pick 7th overall.III like it! In all honesty it could work out for both if Minkah fits in but if they move him around and he sulks ouch....

Good problem to have you just do what Seattle just did move a player for value and draft again to fill the holes. Find a desperate team like Houston along the way never hurts either...

well the masterful PE1 claimed the Cowboys gave away a top ten pick for Cooper. He couldnt have been more wrong.
So if Rudolph doesnt suck & holds his own & if this new guy helps the steelers. They might end up mid pack somewhere. lets say late teens.
Or the steelers can fall off a cliff in which case you might be right.

Anyone the Steelers have drafted in the past 10 years in the upper rounds in the secondary has sucked big donkey balls, so if they want to improve back there under current management this is the only way to do it. I ain't gonna bitch about this one, it's a young kid and maybe he'll grow with Mason. Or maybe they'll both suck and set the franchise back 10 years, who the hell knows.

Or be like Cleveland wondering if you're going 0-16 until all those picks/trades over a decade pan out for a very short window.

Not the worst trade in the world since you're getting a young player that fills a need but your seasons effectively over this year and even if Rudolph plays well there are still a myriad of over issues with the roster and your looking at a top 15 pick.

It would've been a far better move to hold onto that pick because you could probably draft a player at Minkah's level or better. Reeks of desperation for a GM and coach that know that seat is starting to become uncomfortably hot.

But boy are the Dolphins reaping the benefits of desperate people. With there 1st rounders, two 2nd rounders, and two 3rds they are position to get good in a hurry if they play their cards right.

Makes zero sense. Let's trade a 1st for a guy on a team that just lost a starting QB, but had some new guy throw a ball against a team that allowed 400+ yards to Andy Dalton... Okay.

Maybe before Ben got hurt, now theres a decent shot the Dolphins get the top 2 picks next season.

Give the Dolphins credit for tanking right. They are not messing around, they are losing big and trading everyone and getting good value.

Terrible trade for the Steelers. That is likely a top 10 pick for a free safety.
Selling your 1st for a proven commodity though. Knowing how the Steelers draft DBs, their top 10-15 pick woulda been a bust anyway.

I'm ok with this. But I woulda much rather saved that pick to see how things unfolded in the offseason. If Ben hangs 'em up (which he of course said he wants to return at this point), then they will likely lose Maurkice Pouncey who has been on record saying he's riding it out with Ben. They could see quite the roster turnover this offseason. But I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of Colbert making headlines. He'll find a way to gather more draft capital before the 2020 draft. Probably not a 1st Rd pick though.

The defense does finally seem to have a lot of pieces to be a good unit.

But it also won't matter as long as Keith Butler is the DC.
This is what scares me the most. I've been beating that drum for over 2 seasons now. Haden struggled a lot in 2017, and he's been playing better since last year, but I still have plenty of doubts about the defensive schemes. They are built to pressure the QB, and they leave the secondary out on an island. Good QBs will always pick them apart with quick passes early to take the air out of the front 7, then attack them deep to make it hurt late in the game. Seen it for almost a decade now.

I heard today on TV he was rated a late 1st round pick going into the draft. So he might have some upside.
FWIW, Mason was being touted as a top 4-5 QB at the position just months before the 2018 draft. That of course blew up with the Heisman candidacy, like it always does. Lamar Jackson & Baker Mayfield vaulted up the draft boards.
