The 2011 Braves hit closest to home to me, and they were my first instinct when thinking of this thread, but I think the 2007 Mets were worse.

7 game lead with 17 games left

After doing some research, I think I might have left off the worst collapse. The 1964 Phillies had a 6.5 game lead with 12 games left, and had a 10 game losing streak to lose the pennant when they were in first place the entire season before the collapse.

1987 Toronto Blue Jays had a 3.5 game lead over Detroit with a week left in the season.

Proceeded to go on a 7-game losing streak which included being swept in Detroit with the division on the line.

3 up with 4 to play, lost in the 12th inning of Game 163 after taking the lead in the 10th.

This is what I was going for. However, on the flip side, the Brewers in 2018 won their last 7 of the regular season, beat the Cubs in the tie-breaker and then swept the Rockies for an 11 game winning streak last year. That was a fun run.

The second wild card makes it a little harder for epic collapses to occur. In 2011, both the Red Sox and Braves pissed away wild card births, but under the current format, the only thing they would have pissed away was HFA in the WCG.

The 2011 Boston Red Sox season was the 111th season in the franchise's Major League Baseball history. Before the season, the Red Sox were favored to win the American League East and reach the World Series, with some comparing the team to the 1927 New York Yankees.[3][4][5] With a record of 90 wins and 72 losses, the Red Sox finished third in their division, seven games behind the Yankees.

After leading the Tampa Bay Rays by nine games in the AL wild card race on September 3—when their odds of reaching the postseason peaked at 99.6%—the Red Sox lost 18 of their final 24 games.[6] On the last day of the season, September 28, a ninth inning Red Sox blown save loss against the Baltimore Orioles,[7] coupled with an extra inning come from behind victory by the Rays over the Yankees,[8] made the Rays the AL wild card winners, eliminating the Red Sox from postseason contention.

(THIS IS PRETTY BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!!!!)

I think we had an 8 game lead entering September, but it was 10 games in very late August over the Cardinals. We had the worst September record in the NL, the Cards had the best September record in the NL. I don't think we'll ever see dual collapses at the same time like that again.

It's pretty historically significant, especially since the Cardinals went on to win the World Series, but it sucks when your team is one of the ones making that kind of history.

Interestingly, it was the Cards that caught the Phillies.

The Cards have some serious voodoo against us when it comes to playoff series or fighting for a spot in the post season. The next year was the first ever WCG, and Sam Holbrook called an infield fly on a ball 250 feet from home plate. I would have been one of the ones throwing trash on the field, but I was close to the field and was ducking, trying not to get hit by things flying from the upper deck.

Keep in mind the Sox also went 81-42 over 123 games after starting the season 2-10. They were almost on par with the 2018 team for over two thirds of the season. And for the other 39 games, we were 9-30.

My vote goes to "The Phold". I'd also throw in the 1978 Red Sox (I'd say that was worse than 2011 just because there was a false glimmer of hope until Game 163) and the 1995 Angels in here.

2014 A's was pretty bad too. Went from 73-46, best record in the league and 3.5 games ahead of the Angels to 88-74, losing the divison by 10 games and just barely making it to the Wild Card game (only to lose). And that was after they made moves for guys like Jon Lester and Samardzija (though I wouldn't attribute the collapse to either of those guys).

The 64 Phillies were legendary. I say that because I was not even born in 1964 but it was still a topic that would rear it's ugly head on the sports talk radio shows way into the 80's and 90's any time a Philadelphia team looked like it was going to squander a seemingly insurmountable lead. I think it traumatized a lot of people. I can still remember old men cursing Gene Mauch 20 years later.

I think that's why in addition to Cincinnati, Philadelphia is another place where Pete Rose gets a pass no matter what he did/does. After the disaster in '64 they had all those great teams in the mid 70's with Schmidt and Carlton but kept losing in the playoffs until 1980 when Pete showed them how to win.

Fun fact, I think Gene Mauch was the same guy managing the Angels when Donnie Moore gave up that home run.

That 2007 season where the Mets gave up the lead to the Phillies the Phillies lost in the wild card to the Rockies, who won like 22 out of 24 or something crazy in order to get into the wild card game. I'm assuming someone or multiple teams had to collapse to allow that to happen but I can't remember who it was
