With Kick offs the ball is live. So why would a ref blow a whistle dead before the ball can go out of the endzone. If it somehow stayed inbounds wouldnt they have to cover the ball or the other team could score a quick 6? or is the endzone not considered in play?

something something player safety something.

I've wondered that as well, makes no sense why a ball laying in the end zone that never went out is dead.

2018 Kickoff Rule... If a ball gets to the end zone and touches the ground, it’s an automatic touchback. There’s no need for a player to pick it up and kneel, or even catch a ball if it’s headed for the end zone and they don’t intend to return it.

The main goal of the rule changes is to limit the amount of full speed collisions that have made kickoffs the most dangerous play in football.

Don't forget the mandatory CTE scan by a 'trained professional' that automatically happens when the returner goes to the sideline.

When the ball goes into the endzone, there is an automatic time out for commercials.
