I voted for Brett Rypien because I feel he has a higher ceiling then Hogan and I feel the odds of winning if Joe goes down are very low, so might as well work with a guy who hopefully has a future then a stop gap guy.

Really depends on other team's cuts. If not that, I would go Rypien.

I think it is possible for Rypien to play himself onto this Broncos roster. If he doesn't - he should make it okay to the practice squad. Two more preseason games and Fangio isn't going to play his starters much - classic shoot out for the back up QB with plenty of time on the field for either to win the job.

Hogan is starting versus the Rams. I think he'll do well enough to show that he can hold down the #2 spot until Lock comes back. Rypien is supposed to get playing time though. I don't expect it to happen, but if Rypien were to show the kind of improvement that Lock has then I'd go with Rypien instead.

Put Flacco in a flak jacket and there will be no need for a backup QB this year.

Probably Hogan. No need to make a move for anything else. Hogan has some experience so obviously him over Rypien. If we traded for a QB it means we are even more worried about Lock then we let on. San Fran will shop Beathard but they won’t outright release him. He has starting experience he will be wanted. Rypien is better in the long run then Hogan but in the NFL you don’t put an undrafted guy as your backup from the start. Hogan has some experience so guessing we roll with it. Either way Flacco goes down we are screwed so I doubt we get fancy with this one as Lock gets healthy.

That is why I would like to keep Rypien until Lock is healthy. He is cheaper and I am not sure there is enough difference in their play to justify keeping Hogan and Rypien has more upside.

It will be interesting if Lock goes to IR or is a game day inactive as a member of the 53 man roster. Might depend on how he is progressing at the time of cuts.

Always go with some sort of experience as your backup. I never recall a team in NFL history having a rookie undrafted free agent as their week 1 backup. But stranger things have happened. Hey, Sloter will probably get cut so there is always him. ;)

Why put Lock on IR unless his injury is season ending?

I never understand why all teams don’t keep 3 QBs on the 53. That 53rd man rarely if ever dresses for game day so why not have a QB with a skill set you like in the building everyday

If Lock is out 8 weeks then why not put him on IR and return him later? Saves a roster spot. Tricky thing is you can only return two so it would use up one of the two so have to be smart. I can’t see us putting Riddick and Lock on there unless we put Riddick on IR then when he gets healthy cut him if we don’t need him instead of using him as one of our IR to return guys. Safety net for if you need him but just one more player that needs to clear waivers before we can place either on IR.

Drew Lock vs ??? For that 53rd spot.
IMO, Lock needs to be everywhere and not away from the team for 8 weeks.

If you are on IR can you be on the practice field the same time as the team?

I believe if a player is o IR they can attend meetings but I don’t think they can be on the practice field. I could be wrong. @Draft Crazy will know or could find out for sure.

If you keep 3 QBs that is on less at another position you can keep (obviously) and limiting you actives possibilities each week. The NFL is all about matchups and could be an advantage to have more positional options.

It will be interesting what we do. There are three guys that could be on the IR to return later:
Andy Janovich
Theo Riddick
Drew Lock

Joe Jones could be another possibility (don’t remember his timeline for recovery) and we have not reached the season yet. I would say we will have injuries players on the 53 man roster that are unable to practice or play to start the season. The question is which players will be in this situation.

You cannot practice while on IR- But I am sure there are ways around that. ;) On the PUP list you can practice two weeks after you are available to play without being activated.

You can definitely attend meetings and be around the team.

If you are suspended by the league you cannot be around the the team or practice once your regular season suspension starts.

Again don't know the extent of the injuries

Id say if Riddick is scheduled to come back anytime before week 8 keep him on the 53 and move a TE to play FB. Riddick has a skillset perfect for the offense so need him ASAP.

If you keep Riddick on the 53 then maybe have to IR Lock .

Again don't know the extent of the injuries

Well it's pretty obvious after tonight that Rypien has no chance to actually make the team.
